Added windshield. MASSIVE speed boost!
Apparently I was a real drag on the scooter. Not a queen though.
So I really just wanted the brackets that come with the windshield, so I could get one more height from my mirrors, as well as giving me a more stable mount for a Ram Mount. But the cost of the brackets were nearly half the cost of the entire windshield kit, so I just got the whole thing. I figured I could mount or unmount the windshield anytime I felt like it.
Anyway, before the windshield, I could get to about 60bmph, at just a bit under full throttle, on one stretch of my daily commute. Sometimes nearly to 65, but with difficulty, and only if the winds were at my back.
After the windshield, I am now hitting 65 easily, at less throttle than before. I've pushed it to 70, still not at full throttle, but haven't tried to go faster. It is a fairly short 45mph stretch, and full of potholes.
On top of that, I feel like it is accelerating faster too, not just the top speed boost.
I'm tempted to finally take my BlackJack onto the highway for a short stretch, just to see what it can *really* do.

Yes, which one did you get?
On one of my Buddy's I have the Cuppini short windshield, and I really like it, but I want to get one for my new Buddy and was wondering if there is an even better option.
I'll bet you feel like you have more control of the scooter now that you aren't having all that wind hit you in the chest as you are riding. I definitely notice the difference with mine: I enjoy riding my Buddy with the windshield at faster speeds, even on the freeway, but when I ride the one without the windshield, I try to avoid the freeway as I definitely feel less in control. On the one without the windshield, I'm almost afraid to loosen my grip even enough to do the turn signals at freeway speed, for fear of a slight bump dislodging me.
I just got my bling coupon, so it's time to start thinking about what type of windshield I want.

I had the Medium Cuppini on my 170... I can't tell you about any speed increases, because she came to me from the shop with it already installed, but I really liked it, I thought it was the perfect height. Here's a pic:michelle_7728 wrote:Yes, which one did you get?

That's the one I have on my Buddy that has a windshield. Weird as it sounds, it appears that that windscreen is now called the Cuppini short (looks medium to me!)
There's a picture of the "Slipstream 66" in this thread. I'd like to see a straight on shot of a Slipstream 66 on a Buddy, as it looks wider, but about the same height. I wonder if it would be better, or worse...?

Maybe some locktite would help but I have a hell of a time with the Prima medium just staying put. And it rattles and makes noise and knocks the mirrors out of whack.
I am going for this kind of set up, I think:
windshield
pgo number S920613104

Looks to be mounted to the handlebar area somehow. Leaves options for cool aftermarket mirrors. May sell the Prima when the time comes.

Sweet scoot JH. I don't have a windscreen, but when I got my scoot the mirrors would vibrate loose all the time, so much so I carried a wrench to tighten them on the run. So, I used some locktite and haven't had a problem since

Lokky wants a shorter windscreen for the summer, and I suggested Slipstream because I had heard people write about how well they work... but we looked on the Slipstream site and though that all their scooter windscreens looked, well, awful. Very dull and boxy in shape, with no side views available on the site so you can see how the windscreens are contoured. And nothing else on their site is made to attach any other way except onto a handlebar, which a Buddy or Stella doesn't really have. I think he's going with a Prima one from Scooterworks.michelle_7728 wrote:That's the one I have on my Buddy that has a windshield. I have another picture on here somewhere that's a straight shot with me (with crappy morning hair, and make-upless) sitting behind the windshield so that you can see how tall it is... but here's one of the pics I had on FB of it on there. You can see that it goes up to about where my helmets are on the shelf in the background. (Our garage us much more organized and cleaner now!)michelle_7728 wrote:That's the one I have on my Buddy that has a windshield. I'll look through old threads to find the other better picture.
EDIT: Found it! Of course, the bf is tall and took the picture at a downward angle as opposed to a straight eye-level shot, so it makes it look like the windshield only goes up to my chin... but from my perspective, behind the windshield, it goes up to about my nose, and I'm slightly more than 5' tall.

So am I the only person here that seemed to have a decrease in max speed after installing a windshield?!
I suppose I will have to take a little time when it's raining this weekend and fix the mounting hardware to get the darn thing to stay on at low speeds on bumpy roads... Some dummy let her lovely assistant mount up the whole thing without forcing him to read the directions first!

Sweet little yellow lights(?) on the front. Like the saddle bags too although they look small. May I ask where each of these items are available?JHScoot wrote:Maybe some locktite would help but I have a hell of a time with the Prima medium just staying put. Those pictures are from Rexma's thread, I don't think he posted where the lights came from though, just the brake levers, windshield and mirrors. But I'm sure you can find them, or something similar in the states. I just don't know how legal they would be here...pugbuddy wrote:Sweet little yellow lights(?) on the front. I recently had to take my windscreen off for the ride home because I was having a mirror issue (my bad) and really noticed a difference with it off! I'm not talking about speed but just the wind smacking me in the face.
I've been riding with a windshield since November and rode in Boston for most of the winter because we didn't have much snow this year. It feels more comfortable with the windshield on, especially since I ride with my face shield either 2/3 down or open most of the time.
I'm 5 foot 1 and have a medium windscreen.

awin6889: Thanks for sharing your pix. What is your top speed with your windshield on?
Oparu: Where did you get your windshield? What is your top speed with it on?
I'm trying to decide which way to go with this new windshield. I have the same one that ed85379 has, really like it, but just want to check out what's available before ordering another.

Yes, exactly. Such a good job he did with it. All the things on it are pretty tight, I think. But while he did post some items and where to get them, he did not all.
I really like those bags and wonder if they are actually made for bikes, or if they were bought and modded and mounted.
w/e the case if I ever OWN a Buddy (as opposed to taking care of one) I could live with those bags and top case (smaller and "detachable" for me) and windshield very easily, indeed.
So much stuff was done, and it doesn't look overdone at all.

I got my windshield at Danny's Scooter shop in Avon, MA, right before they closed down a few months ago. They had a clearance sale so I got that and my roll-up saddlebags.Oparu: Where did you get your windshield? What is your top speed with it on?
Top speed? Well, I'm not sure about that. I haven't really tested it. I've gone up to 60 but could probably go faster than that on a Buddy 125.

Well, when I had it on I only did a short trip up to the next town. The mph ranged from 35, to 45, 55, 40, 30, then I turned around and went back the same way. I got up to 60 no problem, but without the windshield I can easily travel at 65-70bmph at 3/4 throttle. I'm not sure if it was because I was afraid to go faster or because the scoot just didn't have it in it that day.michelle_7728 wrote:awin6889: Thanks for sharing your pix. My problem was that I let my boyfriend mount it on there without reading the directions-- I think he did something wrong. I say that because it was kind of loose, and flapping around a bit at high speed, I was really afraid to go faster because I didn't want it to get too loose and fly off into my face. So, when I got to Ballston Lake (the next town up), after hitting a few not-so-gnarly bumps, it completely came out of the hardware on one side. I had to stop at a couple gas stations on the way home to get it back on tightly as it kept coming loose.
All that said, I'm going to take off my mirrors and do the whole thing again myself WITH the directions and see what happens. I may need to make a little indent on the bar the goes into the mounting hardware (on the windshield) just to get the screws to stay put when they're tightened-- I have high hopes that it will work much better after I fiddle with it.
It's going to be raining for the next few days, and I don't really have any plans for this week other than work, school and more client work... so I will try to fit it in and let you know by next monday how it handles over the weekend.

So, with the speed increase, and with my scooter just under 2000 miles, I finally felt brave enough to try it on the actual open highway!
This past Friday I took a trip up to Salem. Instead of taking the back roads as I normally do, I hopped onto Rt 1 North, then to 128 a few exits up to Salem.
It probably was not wise to take my very first highway trip in a day where the wind was so strong. Still, I made it, and it was fun! Though my hands were a little stiff from gripping so hard.
So speed-wise, I still don't know what my top speed is. I was cruising at 70bmph, and I still had a bit of throttle left to give it. I wasn't comfortable going faster in those winds, but in hindsight I wish I had tried it for a few moments just to see what I could do.

Well, the BlackJack *is* highway legal. And I proved that by being able to cruise, quite easily, at 70bmph (~65mph). Was on 128 for 4 miles, but if you include the distance on Rt 1 in the left lane, also cruising at around 65bmph, it was about 10 miles at highway speeds in total.siobhan wrote:You took a Buddy on 128? Scooters and motorcycles, almost universally, don't show you your *real* speed. For the Buddy, most people seem to report it being about 10% above your *real* gps-measured speed.

Quite possibly!AWinn6889 wrote:So am I the only person here that seemed to have a decrease in max speed after installing a windshield?!
A lot of people just don't like them for various reasons, usually because of where the airflow hits them or simple aesthetics. But if you're running slower after adding a windshield, the odds of the reason being the windshield are pretty low.
The windshield definitely shouldn't flap around at speed! I rode a Vespa GTS 250 not long ago that did this on the freeway. Annoying.AWinn6889 wrote:Well, when I had it on I only did a short trip up to the next town. The mph ranged from 35, to 45, 55, 40, 30, then I turned around and went back the same way. I don't know if that in and of itself would compromise your speed, though. Even floppy, the windshield is more aerodynamic than a rider.
The number of variables that can affect speed and performance can be summed up as "everything." These small scooters are very sensitive to any change, from an extra slice of pizza in your gut to the weather, tire pressure, whatever. And sometimes, windshield or not, the scooter just has an "off day." The flip side is that sometimes it has a "very on" day and will just scream!

Well, I had done that trip twice that day, one trip right after the other, no windshield followed by with the windshield.
No windshield was great, the scoot performed as it usually does, really well.
With the windshield it was terrible. I was afraid to even push the scoot up to a higher (than the speed limit) speed because of how it was kind of flapping.
So, one of these days I'll make sure it's on there correctly, and super solid before I take it out again, then I'll post a more conclusive review of the Slipstreamer Scoot 66. I'm hoping for the best.

It's possible hat the angle of the windshield is decreasing rather that increasing aerodynamic advantage. If you can, try tilting the windshield at the same angle as your forks & get used to pushing your scoot off the center stand while you're off the left side rather than hitting your head on he windshield trying to use our gut to push it forward while straddling the scoot. A little scary but you'll get used to it on a little buddy.

Okay, managed to get mine installed in about 30 minutes; no chance to test it tonight, but tomorrow promises nice weather and I want to get this thing broken in before the Genuine ride.
I will say getting the final adjustment "just so" is a royal pain. It still seems a little off, but tomorrow will be the test...

I re-installed the Scoot 66 windscreen over the weekend... correctly... and it's awesome.
The bf definitely didn't have it on there right, he tightened down the hardware before he even put the wind screen up there, so the holes for the windshield braces were WAY too far apart for the thing to stay on there safely/without popping out and flapping around.
I have noticed a bit of a speed boost, though I haven't had a nice enough day yet to take it up route 50 again, I have noticed that I get up to 60bmph pretty quickly and can hang onto it at slightly more than half throttle. Also, it started sprinkling Monday night on my way home from work, I ducked behind it a little bit, and it kept the rain drops from stinging my face.
I will post another assessment after giving it a good testing this weekend!

OK, I am absolutely in love with the PGO windscreen pictured above:
windshield
pgo number S920613104
What intrigues me about it and what makes it so appealing to me is that it is attached from below the headset and not onto the rear mirror stalks.
I am guessing this will greatly cut down on the vibration of the rear mirrors I experience with the Cuppini medium windscreen installed.
So I did the requisite Google and eBay searches for that part number and came up empty -- does anyone know if the PGO windshield is available in the US anywhere? Or globally?

Hello BuddyLand:
I recall reading where some people got increase in speed with a windshield.
I put a Cuppini on my Buddy 125 and no change in top speed. I struggled to get the thing to mount and stay put. However it would always come loose, until now. The bottom of the windshield is pressed up against the handle bar area, gorilla tape to prevent scratches, and not moving from air pressure of higher speeds.
For those of you who have a Buddy 125 and get like 55-65 Actual MPH on the flats, really appreciate that, and I envy you. Mine never got to even 50 Actual MPH on the flats, but she is trustworthy and I still like her.

I think it's basically the same as the Cuppini windshield for the '06 Buddy: http://scooterpartsplace.com/windscreen ... short.aspxpinthea wrote:OK, I am absolutely in love with the PGO windscreen pictured above:

The part # was WSBUD1. Some of them came without the black trim. It could be cut along the headlight arc to fit an '07 or later.

I've got a question about windshields. My girlfriend rides a Buddy, and I a Like 200i. We regularly ride across Mobile Bay along the causeway where it gets VERY windy sometimes. On the Buddy going over 45-50mph you really get thrown around by the wind, it seems the lower half of the scoot likes to sway around a bit. Sometimes she prefers to swap up and ride the Like across, it's a bit heavier (maybe 30lbs) and has a wider legshield, and wider tires, it's much more stable at higher speeds in the wind.
What i'd like to know is if having a windshield on the Buddy helps with stabilizing the scooter in high winds... or worsens it? I've heard it can do both.

Hello BuddyLand:
Some topics on this forum sound too good to be true.......
"Added windshield. MASSIVE speed boost"
Sounds kind of like promoting restoration of hair for those who wish it back on their head and currently have none.
As such, Please support getting this topic to be in the

can't 100% answer, but here's subjective input:BeefSupreme wrote: What i'd like to know is if having a windshield on the Buddy helps with stabilizing the scooter in high winds... or worsens it? I've heard it can do both.
My buddy has no windshield, and I get tossed around. it's also super light.
The kymco had a small deflector I could see over. it was also a lot heavier, but it deflected the wind nice.
the Beo has what my MC riding pal affectionately calls the giant "p*ssy deflector". Rode it in VERY high winds, 2 up, for 200 miles in NM and TX. It was great, and didn't create a sail effect.
I'd say the light weight of the buddy will get it tossed more than many. A windshield will probably help it cut through that a bit.

Yes, the PGO windscreen I'm looking for does seem to be mounted from beneath the head unit, not on top of it on the rear mirror mounts.
I'd LOVE to get one....
As far as my existing Cuppini medium windscreen goes, which mounts to the rear mirror mounts, other than it seeming like it causes my rear view mirrors to vibrate a lot when stopped since now there's a high and heavier load (the wind screen) attached to them, I do love the general wind protection it provides me and am glad I have it installed.
I could care less about any increase or loss in fuel economy, it increases my comfort, reduces fatigue, and that's what matters.
In a windy situation, however, it can act like a bit of a sail and cause you to be more wind-impacted in a stiff cross wind. But so far I haven't found it dangerous, it's just something to be mindful of. The larger the windscreen, the bigger the 'sail' it creates. Also know that you will have to ensure any scooter cover you buy can account for the increased height and size due to windscreen.
