Ignition ?
I'm parting out a 2008 Buddy 50 on Craigslist and if a person contacts you only looking for the ignition and asking if that "unlocks the trunk", should I assume that they stole one ?

Re: Ignition ?
Either they stole it or someone recovered their own scooter from a theft attempt, during which the thief jacked up the ignition.kooky scientist wrote:I'm parting out a 2008 Buddy 50 on Craigslist and if a person contacts you only looking for the ignition and asking if that "unlocks the trunk", should I assume that they stole one ?

Hard to say, but that is a strange question. If they stole it and really are just interested in the contents of the pet carrier, I'd think they could get in there using brute force. My suggestion is, if you're not comfortable with the buyer, then hang onto it. There's very frequently someone here on MB who suffers the type of damage I described, an ignition being ruined in a theft attempt, so you could feel good about helping a fellow MB member get back on the road.

That sounds kinda fishy to me... I agree that if someone owns a Buddy they'd know how it works already. Maybe ask the person what they are trying to do... leave it open and see what they say.
Then, if possible, direct them to your local Genuine scooter shop. Also call up the shop to give them a heads-up so that they can discreetly check out the scooter and get more info to determine if it's a stolen scooter.

This is possible, but a good scooter citizen would make an attempt to get the VIN and run a check.kooky scientist wrote:I asked him if it was stolen and he replied, "No the scooter isn't stolen I bought it at a auction from a tow company and it didn't come with keys so let me know if you can sell it or I can just order one online"
Which is the only correct answer. What is the value of a used ignition?
What's the price of a new lock set?

Heh, funny enough I had just recently posted about that! In this thread: "Thefts: If You haven't Noticed" topic21914.htmlphatch wrote:Figure this is as good a thread as any to ask...
I really like Yamaha's scooter ignitions, with the cover that slides over to prevent/delay a thief jamming something into the ignition. Anyone know if Genuine ignitions can be swapped out for Yamahas?
Genuine's Blur 220 comes with one of these:

"Picture covers it fine. There's a security cover you can flip over the ignition hole, and the key has an additional built in slider with a funny ridge and a bump or two that'll snap it back out. "
I don't like it much/use it honestly, but if you're interested, perhaps your Genuine dealer can get creative, or swap one out. Or you could try to fashion one yourself if you're crafty!

That's it! Don't think I could do it myself, but I might have to contact them about it.. or see if anyone's parting out an old Yam/Blur. Thanks for sharing...Edwub wrote:Heh, funny enough I had just recently posted about that! In this thread: "Thefts: If You haven't Noticed" topic21914.html

I don't know, but considering the multiple functions that the key performs (activating the starter, cutting off the engine, releasing the seat, locking the steering column) I'd be surprised if they were compatible.phatch wrote:I really like Yamaha's scooter ignitions, with the cover that slides over to prevent/delay a thief jamming something into the ignition. As far as I recall when playing with the Zuma at the dealer, it did those exact functions... But the Yamaha C3 didn't unlock the pet carrier.TVB wrote:I don't know, but considering the multiple functions that the key performs (activating the starter, cutting off the engine, releasing the seat, locking the steering column) I'd be surprised if they were compatible.phatch wrote:I really like Yamaha's scooter ignitions, with the cover that slides over to prevent/delay a thief jamming something into the ignition. It isn't just which functions... but also with each one there's a chance that PGO implements it one way on the Buddy, but Yamaha does it another way.phatch wrote:As far as I recall when playing with the Zuma at the dealer, it did those exact functions...
