Buddy front basket hardware?

Post by Jana »

Hi all
Has anyone seen hardware only for a front basket for a Buddy? I have sooo many baskets of my own that I'd love to use (great marketing ploy!), but I'd like to have official hardware, so I don't have to do any modifications.
Would it be worth the $25 or so to buy the wire basket and just use the hardware that comes with it, or can anyone point me to something cheaper?
Thanks!

Jana, the front cowl has three mounting holes welded to the front frame. On a stock Buddy, only the center has a bolt in it, but if you remove that bolt and the two up top behind the legshield, you can remove the front cowl and see the mounting points. If you look at the inside of the cowl, you'll see the factory cut-through points to access the other two mounts, typically used by a front rack.

Michelle's thread about front rack mounting has lotsa pictures.

If you take the existing center bolt into the hardware store, you can match its size and thread pitch. The local Home Depots and Lowe's have threaded blocks on the shelves in the hardware department for you to match to your existing bolt. From there, you should be able to cobble together something that would screw into a couple or three of the mounting points and hold on to your basket(s) with hooks, clamps, or some such. Remember to buy stainless steel if possible to avoid corrosion.

Oops, forgot to thank you, Pete, for the info!

We tried my Longaberger bicycle basket the other day, and it was just too darned big for the front. I felt like I couldn't see the road in front of me as much as I would like. The DH rigged up something to go on that front mounting screw, and it worked great, so I might try a wire basket instead of something "solid".

I'm thinking I might just go with a trunk or something in the back, since that's what I had on my Kaw.
