Question about 2003 Genuine Stella

Post by jbhutto »

hey ive been looking into getting one of these and found one fairly close.

it has around 1500 miles and the seller is asking around 1800 for it.

unfortunately it's dinged up a bit. there's a dent on the front fender that's fairly noticeable and another one not as noticeable on the front of the frame.

then there are some paint issues, looks like the cowl on one side has been touched up rather sloppily and then the handlebars as well.

im new to the scooter world as well but ive seen sales posted for stellas in much better condition for around the 2k mark. what would be a fair price to offer the seller. i want to get it for a good price but i dont want to lowball them (too much) can post up pics in a bit

Some of this would depend on your location and what the going rates are for scooters. A few weeks ago here in Oregon I purchased a 2008 with 365 miles on it like new for $2000. I know it was a deal but use this as an example of the possibilities of finding something a little better for your money. Find out the replacement price for the damaged parts and make a list to give to the seller with your offer. Dont feel bad for making an offer. You might get a deal.

With the scoot in that shape in 1500 miles, I'd be a bit concerned that it's been properly maintained and cared for. It's barely been ridden in 9 years and likely wasn't stored properly when not being ridden. All the damage is a telltale sign that this has been neglected. Personally, I'd opt for one with many more miles at the same price if I knew it had been properly kept up.

Seller stated it had new battery / tune up within the year. Also:

"The scooter was dropped by a previous owner. You'll notice some paint splotches that don't exactly match. That was our temporary solution to the cosmetic issues. It's a water based paint and would wipe off if you would want to touch it up with the factor paint (which is available through Genuine). Overall it's in pretty good shape and runs great. Also includes a battery charger and cover."

Any other questions I need to ask.

I agree. My main concern would be the oil seals being dried out. Personally with the age and body damage I wouldn't go over $1K and that would be pushing it. I would also be planning on dropping the motor and splitting the cases to replace the seals and as long as I was in there the crank. Ethanol sucks!

KBB says a 2003 in EXCELLENT would be retailed for around 1880. So for what it's worth you can use that to go by.

yeah they said $1500 was lowest theyd go. with the body being dented i don't see paying that for it. most of the others i found were all around $2000 and im guessing i could get one for around what the kbb says.
