can't get my mirror back on

Post by Diblit »

sorry if this is a repeat thread (i searched for mirror issues, but did not find this one).

either i'm an idiot or my mirror is uncooperative. i took my mirror off so i could attach a ram gps mount. now i can't get the darn thing lined up right to get it to screw back in. i'm super embarrassed about this and don't want to take it to the shop (although i know they'd understand) to have them screw it back in for me.

any thoughts?

Which one did you pull off. The one on the right hand side is reverse threaded so turning it left would tighten it.

yep....it was the right side. thanks!! just seems a little backward for me with all the "righty tighty lefty loosy" that i've learned. and, duh, now that i think of it, that's the way i've turned it to tighten it when it was loose. ok.....SUPER embarrassed!! thanks so much for your help!

Cant get mirror back on

Post by theflash784 »

Don't be too embarassed. It's a common mistake. It drove me crazy too when my mirrors would come lose and I couldn't tighten it. My dealer put some loctite on it and it has not been a problem.

it's a four piece system that works with my garmin. piece one has a hole in it that fits in the mirror (you take the mirror off, slide the piece onto the mirror, and screw the mirror back in - and in my case i'm mechanically challenged so i needed help with that part). piece one has a ball on it that connects with piece two. then the third piece attaches to that (which then attaches to the piece that holds the gps). not sure what the numbers are for each part. if i can find pics i'll post them.

i like it...it holds the gps very securely. problem is, though, that now i know how fast i'm really going.

Can you post a couple of pictures with it all assembled? I'm having a hard time envisioning how this all goes together. Seems like part 4 would snap on to part 1 and you wouldn't need part 2 or 3, but it's probably my not getting how it all fits together.

I've been wanting to do something like this for a while, but am not sure...are all the mounting balls the same size for snapping the Garmins on? If not, how do you figure which size mounting ball is needed?

these are pics i found on the web, so they're as close as i could find. the first one is how piece 1 mounts to the mirror (try to ignore the extraneous piping behind it that is part of the wind screen):

this next pic is what the rest of the pieces look like with the gps attached (but it has a different piece #1):

hope this helps. i will try to get pics of my own on my scoot tomorrow.

i think all the balls are the same. piece 3 and 4 are customized to fit the gps that you use. the guys at sport tour in cincinnati did the ordering for me....i just told them what gps i had (took all the guess work out of it for me).

I used to use a Ram Mount mounted though my mirror stem. The problem is, the thickness of the Ram portion uses up a lot of the threads, so the bit that goes into the handlebars is greatly reduced. This caused my mirror to keep loosening no matter how tight I thought I had it. I had mine on the left mirror though.

The windshield brackets would solve that problem though.

I get it now. That other piece is to extend it closer to you / higher.

Very nice--thanks for posting that for me, in clarification! :D

seems to be that i'm going 10mpg less than my buddy says i'm going, regardless of whether i'm at slower speeds or not. i've been at bmph 65 a couple of times (for a very short distance), but i'd rather be going slower....higher speeds still make me nervous. i have noticed that when i'm fully geared up i will go faster (and now that the temps have dropped into the upper 80s i'm all geared up all the time). i know, i know...ATGATT....but with the oppressive 100 degree temps it was difficult to put another layer on.

I have the RAM GPS mount, but with the angled base rather than that flat-stock piece as shown above. Fortunately, I have a windshield, so the RAM base is mounted below the big honkin' windshield bolt in the handlebar's mirror socket, not on the mirror stem. There seems to be no length problem adding the RAM base to that bolt, but if there were, it's easy to get a longer bolt.

You can see it at the top of this pic:
