Best resource for used scooter values?

Post by mhardgrove »

So, looking to pick up another scooter so I can go on rides with my wife, what's the best resource or guide for used scooter values? I'm thinking either an old PX Vespa, Stella, or name brand scooter (Genuine, Honda, Etc.. No chineese death traps), but looking at Craigslist and classifieds most people want near new prices for 4-5 year old scooters. I'm not looking to pay new prices, then again, not wanting to low ball people either. I just want a good resource that gives a fair value.

There is a motorcycle section on the kelly blue book website. Scooter values can be found there.

Values vary greatly by market, season, etc. There's really no one-stop reference that's reliable. KBB is a start, but it's also best to spend some time trolling Craigslist and eBay in your area to see what things are selling for.

I believe you can use a 2d20 x 1d6 and you get a +4 charisma bonus if buying a Buddy but I could be off here.

Denver and boulder is quite inflated, so i actually search nearby areas. Wyoming, Santa Fe and high rockies all give me much better prices. for example, in new Mexico on cl there is aa kymco xciting 250, 2007. 1000 miles. 2100 dollars. there is a vino 125 for 1350 on cl right now in Denver.

Also, nada.com -- both NADA and KBB ask for zip code to adjust for regional pricing quirks.

as ericalm said, season plays a big part. If you want until Colorado is buried in snow, you may be able to score a good deal from someone who has to sell.

Start asking everyone you know if they know anyone with a scooter to sell. You'd be amazed how the woman at the diner has a brother-in-law with an old Vespa sitting in his garage that drives his wife crazy.

I agree that KBB and NADA are a good place to start, but I find that Craigslist itself gives me a pretty good feel for the market. A quick look at Craigslist shows plenty of choices in the Denver area. Two 150 Buddys at just over $2K - a little high perhaps but not a bad level to start talking. Looks like 6 Stellas - all at or under $2K. And a couple PX 150s at around or just above $2K. Sounds like fair prices to me for mid-summer, not knowing anything about the individual scooters, of course  .

If you go to scooterfinds.com - pick the scooter you like and then decide what geographical area you care about, then pick teh scooter of interest and you see a price check graphic

That will show you what the age and price distribution is for those for sale - for example
