New Tire?

Post by magnato1 »

This is a pic of the rear tire on my Cali Classic. It has 2,000 miles. Do I need to change this tire? Personally, I think it looks like it's time for a new one because the tread in the middle is worn down and seems like the thinner the rubber the greater chance of having a high speed blow out like this:

<object name="kaltura_player_1359610950" id="kaltura_player_1359610950" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowScriptAccess="always" allowNetworking="all" allowFullScreen="true" height="300" width="533" data="http://www.kaltura.com/index.php/kwidge ... 51"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="allowNetworking" value="all" /><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /><param name="movie" value="http://www.kaltura.com/index.php/kwidge ... 1"/><param name="flashVars" value=""/><a href="http://corp.kaltura.com">video platform</a><a href="http://corp.kaltura.com/video_platform/ ... ent">video management</a><a href="http://corp.kaltura.com/solutions/video_solution">video solutions</a><a href="http://corp.kaltura.com/video_platform/ ... ing">video player</a></object>

Here's the tire:

where did the tread down the middle start? was it ever thick? i can't tell where the wear indicators are? i can look and guess, but guessing does no good

sure looks worn. and if the indicators are where i am guessing i would say it is. but with just 2000 miles, sheesh!

Yeah, it was thick, it had a center groove and everything. I think I can see the wear indicators in the picture actually. I don't remember what kind of tire it is, I'll check tomorrow and try to post a pic of a new one, but I think it's probably time for a new rear tire.

As the tire appears to be wearing excessively in the center you might want to check whether you have it overinflated. Too high a psi will cause that. Generally 30psi in the rear and 30psi (maybe 28psi) in the front are normal.

As for whether it needs replacing, look for the wear tabs in the tread. If you have reached them (or passed them) then it is time to replace.

This is what it looked like new. It's a Duro HF296A.

It's definitely worn to the indicators, time for a new tire, I ordered a Heidenau K-61 today.
