Let me get the dumb question out of the way first, this is with the bike running correct? Your headlight only comes on when the engine runs, when you turn the ignition on you only get the pilot light.
Assuming the headlight filament is intact there is two spots where the wiring tends to fail: the switch and the spot between the headset and the clutch housing.
The switch may have gone bad due to corrosion or come loose. Simply unscrew the little black box around it and inspect the contacts.
The spot between the headset and clutch is a cramped space and as you shift your headlight cable will tend to rub. In the long run this can wear the cable down and short the circuit. Usually this issue leads to the headlight working in certain gears and not in others. Fixing this can be done either by dremeling out extra space for the cable or by rewiring a new switch either into the top of the headset or the top of the glovebox.

Why don't you get it checked by a mechanic. Your head led lights will work well after that.
