4T Rev Limit

Post by Maximus53 »

How hard can you push a Stella 4T? Can I cause damage by revving to high or is there a rev limiter like most cars have? If I can cause damage, how high is too high?

Thanks!

I put about 300 miles on my 2012 4-T Stella this weekend with over 200 of those miles at Wide Open Throttle :)

It did fine, I'm not worried about revving it too high.

Yeah in 4th gear, I cannot get anywhere near the engine sounding like it might be starting to have trouble. My question is more related to being in first, second, or third gear how high i can take it before shifting.

A big reason for this question is the gap between 3 and 4 seems to be larger than other gears. By this I mean that if i shift where i normally would (by sound and feel) i am well below the power band for 4th gear. Where as if i rev it up a bit more to an indicated 40mph then when i shift, there is some nice power available.

Really i am more curious than anything, can i blow up my engine by running WOT in first or second gear or will something prevent this?

Really damn high.

I got caught in some steep, narrow, curvy hills not long ago. Speed limit was a mere 25mph. I was in 1st gear, high RPMs, 15mph all the way up those damn things!

They were! They all had stops at the bottom, too, so I couldn't get up speed before tackling the next incline!

Ive gotten up to around 50 (indicated) in 3rd once or twice, not something I would do on the regular, but it the engine kept pulling and I was in the mood to push it ;)
I really need to figure out some sort of tach one of these days.

Regarding the orig. poster's question, I've wondered about this myself. I do find, especially going up an incline, that if I shift to 4th before hitting at least 40 mph in 3rd, that I start to lose momentum. The rpms sound high at this point, but not "the engine is going to blow up" high.
I've also heard others say that a stock Stella 4T will simply not have enough air flowing through the engine to ever get the revs high enough to damage itself.

When I am cruising at WOT and hit a decline in the hyway I always back off on the throttle a tad so as to keep a constant load on the valves and rings. No fear of over revving or over heating and I can feel the engine controlling the bike speed (55mph) which I like.

There is a rev limiter so you won't destroy your engine by over revving. This doesn't mean it's healthy to push it to the limit all the time though (I keep reminding myself of this).
