New Stella 4T

Post by gar1013 »

Just picked up my Stella, and my first scooter ever, this weekend.

Previously, I'd ridden motorcycles, but it's been a few years. Frankly, between the way people drive here in SoCal and the fact that my commute ranges between 3 miles and 12 miles, a motorcycle just seemed overkill. Plus, I can take scenic surface roads the entire way that aren't overly crowded.

So far, I'd have to equate the bike to riding on an old Honda CB360 I used to have. Bench seats, neutral riding position, and handling that can be described as responsive or a bit unnerving depending on the situation. :)

I have to say that the shifting seems to be a non-issue. Best tip ever was from the dealer who told me that there's plenty of torque to do a 2nd gear takeoff, and to avoid dropping into first until you are at a dead stop.

Now the wait begins: need all my chrome to arrive and to hit the break-in service mark. There's an Abarth pipe (could be a knock-off, but looks about right) that's been modified to fit a Stella, and it'll be going on in due order.

My shakedown ride home from the dealer was certainly memorable. First time on a scooter for more than a 2 block loop, and I'm cruising up the PCH and then up through Malibu canyon. Not something I'd suggest for someone that had never been on two wheels, but what a nice way to get used to the bike.

Well done you and welcome! The Stella is a cool bike. I like it but I like my 170I better... The Stella looks better though... What color did you get?

I went with Red.

There were a few different colors to choose from over at Rt. 66 Modern Classics where I picked it up -- but they were having specials on the Red one I bought, as well as the Green. The Red one was picked up from a dealer that went out of business and the Green one was one they just wanted to finally blow out of inventory.

Really and truly, I've always loved the green, BUT... the fact that it seems like the Greens are harder for dealers to move tells me that I'm in the extreme minority. Should I ever find myself in a situation where I'd be forced to sell, I suspect it'd take me awhile to find a buyer who also loves drab colors.

In terms of the colors that are out there, I also really like the blue and the cream, the latter being a color that I rarely like on anything. Still, the red is a fun color, highly visible, and you can't argue with $700 off.... but what you can do is quickly order enough accessories so that your savings evaporate!

I just got back from another "shakedown" ride going to and from one of the places I work out of. Discovered that it's probably best to lock the glove box whilst riding, as it vibrated open at one point!

Certainly not the fastest ride, but I was able to hang with a Harley rider down some gently curving roads. Then again, I guess that isn't saying much... :)

You probably got one of the red ones from the NOHO closure. I got a blue one from Beach City Scooters in Laguna Beach. I wanted the Blue and cream one but I couldn't find one so slate blue it was. I'd like to personalize it but I don't know colors to use....

I think you're right. A dealer near me has an '08 Avocado Stella with 500 miles on it and they are only asking 2200. But then they have an 09 That's Powder Blue with 10x the miles on it that they want 2600 for (even though it's not in great shape).

Yup, that was the dealer they mentioned.

The blue is a very nice color, and the blue and cream doubly so. If you are seriously thinking about having some paintwork done, I'd suggest you think about maybe a pair of dark navy racing strips on the right side of the leg shield (when facing the bike) - perhaps broken up by a circle (or no circle) with some numbers. That'd look pretty good.

You could probably also get away with something orange, as a sort of bastardized formulation of the old Gulf racing color scheme.

I too am making the transition from motorcycle to Stella. For me if was a 1996 honda shadow ace 1100 I rode for 5 years before I had a get-off from a woman turning left and hit me. Left my knee badly broken and dislocated, now 2years later I feel ready to ride again and picked up a 2012 end of model year sale in all cream, added rack and sidestand.
Been a little nervous about riding again. But it's like an obsession, these little scoots.. got into my blood more than the big bike did.
