[NBR] Aprilia dumped all its fuel. FIXED!

Post by jrstone »

Went for a short ride a couple nights ago and the Sportcity died about a mile from home. I got it restarted (with some difficulty) and rode it home where it died again as soon as I stopped. Shortly after that it started leaking fuel from the air box. I thought that maybe I had just flooded it and the excess fuel was leaking out and it appeared to have stopped after a few minutes. I left it to deal with in the morning, but when I went out to look at it, it looked like ALL of the fuel leaked out. I know I am at least looking at a fuel tap stuck open, but what other issues should I be checking for. The scooter is still under warranty, but the closest dealer is 90 miles away so I am probably on my own. I am not afraid of getting my hands dirty and have worked on my own cars since I was 16. I am new to scooters and carburetors though.

Oh... and I am aware that I will have to change the oil. I opened the dipstick to see if the fuel had contaminated the oil. When I did that, a fuel/oil mixture erupted everywhere. Very messy.

Bummer. Is it carbureted? If so it would likely be the float.

Finally got her fixed. Had to wait a while for a new fuel tap (hooray Piaggio), but once I installed that and changed all the fluids, everything is back to normal. Also, for good measure, I ditched the boring DOT blinkers in favour of the factory set it should have had to begin with.
