UPDATE: Buddy 50 is alive and feisty!

Post by Dirvin »

As you may remember, my beloved 2008 Buddy 50 w/13,000 miles seemed to be down for the count (wrist pin circlip broke off and trashed cylinder). Despite being really busy, the good folks at Sportique Boulder got me in the queue quicker than expected, and upgraded Buddy with the 70cc cylinder kit (something I was thinking about for a while). Pete (the owner) even offered to deliver the scooter to my home 12 miles east of Boulder. I've got to give props to him, and JP, a great mechanic, for 5 years of great "service after the sale." Sportique knows scooters, and that's all they do. They're really the only ones to consider for quality scooters in Boulder/Denver. BTW, Buddy is feeling pretty feisty about his "transplant" and has morphed into one hot little number on the road.

Dirvin,

It was the end. Now it's a new beginning!

Congratulations on getting your Buddy back and enjoy the newfound power. I helped my local shop with a '99 Zuma II resurrection with an Athen a 70cc kit and was able to test-drive it afterwards. Very snappy for a little bike! Looking forward to doing the same to my '02 Zuma, which has the same engine design as your Buddy.

Glad your shop was able to get your scoot sorted quickly as well.
At what point does a hobby become an addiction? I'm uncertain, but after the twelfth scooter, it sorta feels like the latter...

Seriously...I've lost count...

Seven mopeds ...that's still manageable...

What did it increase your top speed to? Or is it more of a "it gets to that same top speed faster now" thing? :)

Congrats, by the way!

To answer your question, the 70cc upgrade noticeably improved acceleration and top speed. I'm still breaking it in, but I already see 10mph added to the top end, and I'm thinking it could go up another 5mph. (50-55bmph top speed). Both me and Buddy are very happy.

Shop wants me not to push it to the max, and keep varying speeds for 100-200 miles, so I'll be done with that in another week. Then we'll see the true potential.
