Buddy 125 exhaust fail opinions...

Post by sc00ter »

O.K., I sell my 07 Buddy and end up buying it back years later. It came back with a Prima stainless pipe. Of course that cracked and I found a vey rusty stock exhaust for $20. Now I have a blow-thru hole from the rust and need a new exhaust. Should I go OEM stock or save some money and get the NCY stock replacement. I have found no opinions on the NCY exhaust but they are about $50 cheaper than a OEM. The stock pipe that was on the scoot when I first sold it had 25,000 trouble free miles, witch he no longer has. This scoot is my daily and lives outside year round, so looks do not matter-just durability. Thanks for any opinions.

NYC is a good exhaust sounds deeper than stock. My wife has had one for a couple of years now with no trouble

Our local dealer practically gives away stock exhaust. He had a out 10-15 in a box.
161cc big bore kit, NCY big valve head Hand ported, NCY transmission kit, jetted and tuned. I can port your cylinder head.

The NCY exhaust is a very nice quality exhaust, and it has a few advantages over the Prima such as overall better build quality, a more secure attachment bracket and more ground clearance on the header pipe. I have the NCY pipe on two of my Buddies, having replaced the Prima pipe on the Blackjack with the NCY pipe after the brackets on the Prima broke and the can itself started to tear. On the other hand, I am not at all a fan of the sound of the NCY pipe. I far prefer the sound of the Prima pipe which has a richer throatier tone. The NCY is quite a bit brighter (noise-wise), and I find myself now always wearing ear plugs to limit my discomfort from listening to the NCY pipe. Granted, I run both pipes without the optional baffle which seems like it would make the noise from the NCY pipe tolerable. On a 125 I think that using the baffle would be entirely appropriate. It would also make the NCY pipe the most economical option unless you could locate a bargain on the stock pipe as lovemysan described.

Given the chance, I would go for a stock exhaust on a Buddy 125. If you are looking for a slightly richer tone you might even consider a stock 150 pipe which has a slightly higher flow and some deeper tones than the 125 pipe. The 150 pipe can be mounted on a 125 with only the slightest of modifications. However, like the other non-OEM options this pipe also comes at the price of being slightly louder, which I do not necessarily consider an advantage. My advice would be to fit an OEM stock exhaust, especially if you can find one at a discount... even if you can't.

Thanks for the input. My localish dealer never has any stock used exhaust, so a used bargain is not a option, but I may just call anyways. Being cheap at the moment Im leaning towards the NCY. If it comes with a baffle its going in. I had a LeoVince on my Zuma 125 and never even started it without its baffle insert. A bit louder than stock but very durable with nice build quality.

A have a spare used stock exhaust that came off of a 2009 Buddy 125 that I could send you for the cost of shipping. It's not pristine. It was on the scooter for 10K miles. It has a couple of scratches, some of which have a touch of superficial rust, and the heat shield is removed. But it is perfectly functional, doesn't have any leaks and seems like it should last for at least another 10-15K miles - at least in CA conditions. PM me if you're interested.

Got the NCY installed. Very nice for the price. Only one small issue. Which way does the silencer go in? No instructions and cant find any mention of it online. It looks like a cup with a pipe thru it. Does it go cup side in toward the exhaust or flat part in? Right now I have it flat side in toward the exhaust (cup end obviously facing out) and it just seems loud. Anyone get instructions or know of the correct way it goes in? Thanks again for any clues.

Only if it had instructions listed with it and mention of the sound reducing baffle insert pictured. Im gonna try to flip it around and see if that helps.
