Looking for this elusive helmet...

Post by Drumwoulf »

Sometime back I saw an ad in a bike mag for a new style helmet; it was
a standard 3/4 open face style with a flip-up visor, but it also had a
tubular steel chin guard rail, much like NFL quarterbacks use with
their helmets.
Being a dedicated 3/4 helmet wearer, it looked like something I'd really
like but I've been unable to find any further reference to it
anywhere. I'm pretty sure it's European, but other than that, nada!!

-Anyone? :?: :?:

Thanks,
Namaste,

drummer,
go here towards the bottom of the forum on this link: http://www.ducatimonster.org/smf/index. ... .msg651392

Maybe what you are talking about? They are police riot hellmets, I think.
Beer is the answer . . . what was the question?

Found it. $510 to $565 USD (converted from the EURO), not counting shipping. One ripoff place even wanted $660. Definitely think I'll wait on this one...

Ouch !
That is pricey, plus you would have to find a fake DOT sticker and hope that if you ever get pulled over the cop would not start asking questions.

Never, in 27 years of riding, have I ever seen that happen..!
In fact I don't even think it's a law that your helmet requires some kind of rating. Only that (in most States anyway) you hafta wear one... I think those ratings are just for your own safety benefit, no? :?:

And if perchance a DOT rating should actually be the law in some States, there's no way in hell a helmet like that Shuberth J1 is gonna look like one of those unrated flimsy plastic beanies the "bikers" wear. A cop whould hafta be almost TOO sharp to catch something like that, IMO!

Here's another interesting French concept modular helmet, the CAberg Downtown Reverso. Terrible name, but a good lid that's much cheaper than the Shuberth; if they sold it here in the USA I'd buy one in a minnit!

true enough...but

we have one such cop in my neighborhood. on one of our few (pre lambretta) harley/bubby rides around town we stopped in front of Confederate Motorcycles a manufacturer refugee from N.O. to look through the window. a cop stopped i thought to tell use to get off the sidewalk (it was sunday hence a ghost town).
but he is a reborn motorcyclist who had a near fatal accident 20 years ago and is now riding again. he oggled don's 76 superglide and my tiny buddy, but he also checked out our helmets for dots and lectured us on safety. i don't know if the dot is the law though.
He and his wife are currectly referrees at Barbers Motorsport speedway and see some crazy stuff. We spent the good part of an hour talking. i think the only way i pasted the muster was that i'd taken the MSC.

i love the EU chin guard on that 3/4 helmet. i want it...$200 worth of want though.

In most states, DOT approval is a requirement. Snell rating, although tougher than DOT is not.

Is Snell really all that? Maybe not:

Caberg, unfortunately, is pulling out the US market entirely. They just couldn't sell enough volume here and are focusing on Europe where they sell a lot of lids.

Snell and DOT are two different animals;
See what Snell has to say: http://www.smf.org/articles/dot.html
