engine rebuild?

Post by robtaylor »

i just bought a 2006 buddy w/ 2772 miles on it for $1,200. i took it to my local dealer and they told me that the shaft was bent and the engine will eventually need to be rebuilt for $1,000.00. the bike should still have some warranty left on it, my dealership was going to call genuine about whether the warranty should cover this. they also have a used motor w/ only 100 miles on it that they could swap out.

i guess my 3 questions are

1) how do you bend the shaft inside the motor?
2) what would you do if they say its not covered by warranty
3) how much should a used motor cost?

As far as I know the warranty is not transferable and it is only valid for the first owner.

If you get the dealer to cover those repairs under warranty, on a scooter that you bought used, you should take them out to dinner ! :D

Good luck.
Beer is the answer . . . what was the question?

IIRC, My warranty card dose not say that.

2) learn some about how our toys work.

i read today that a new motor is like $947.00 so obviously the last thing i'm obliged to do right now is to have the old motor rebuilt as i could buy a new one for the same
$ or i can buy a used motor for around 400-500 i think.

a new question... what kind of damage would i do to the rest of the bike (and potentially the rider) if i just rode it till this engine stopped cranking?

Depending on how much the crank was damaged; shops can often return the journals and oversize the bearings.
Not sure what shops are able to turn a small Buddy crank but you should check out motorcycle speed shops that would do that type of work.
I would be a little concerned on why the crank is bent, usually that only occurs when the motor is abruptly stopped like in an accident. You will need to check the mains, rods, piston, piston pin and sleeves as well. Like the guy above said that’s a big deal your working with.
Where can you find a used motor?

From what little I know, a bent shaft is a very big deal and basically the most costly of damage you can possibly have to deal with.

ao
i bought it in oklahama city and trailered it back to tulsa, so the only time i drove it was from my house to the dealership, the only thing i really noticed was a tapping noise that sped up as i did. then i got a call from my dealership saying that it was going to need to eventually be rebuilt.

this makes me wonder if i have any way to find out if it was in an accident that the previous owner failed to tell me about, maybe i should call his dealership and see if they had to make any repairs to the scoot.

i have yet to hear from the previous owner since i let him know about the motor.

btw- the dealer called and told me that the oil smells like gas, i'm not sure what this would indicate.

gas in your oil means a leaky oil seal, which would make sense if your crank is damaged.

Is it a 50cc? it's possible the previous owner ran it w/o 2-stroke oil, that's probably the most likely reason the crank would become damaged (lack of proper lubrication). It *could* happen in an accident, but I'd think there'd be more visible symptoms of the accident. It could have "just happened." because the part wasn't machined right or there was a fault in the metal, it happens to the best of 'em.

Fix it ASAP.

$1000 for a rebuild with a new crank seems a bit high, but I guess it's a lot of work and they'd want to steer you towards just replacing it. The low-mileage used engine is probably the way to go, as long as they can confirm it wasn't damaged in its accident.

If they're certain it's damaged or out of alignment, it can AND WILL eventually snap and it will likely destroy a large portion of your motor (if it's not already damaged,) and it'll surely happen unexpectedly, while you're riding, it's definitely not a safe situation, best case (which isn't saying much) is that ou'd lose power suddenly in traffic, but it's also possible that engine would lock up and you'd be thrown from the bike. You don't want to risk that.

A sudden lockup would be my fear as well, but I'm not certain how likely that is. Still, I'd rather not risk the possibility of my engine seizing while I'm zipping along at 50 mph. The results could be unpleasant.

I'm also curious whether it's a 50 or a 125. I assumed from the beginning that it was a 125 but the displacement was never mentioned. I'd have an especially bad feeling about this if it was a 125 and I'd probably lean towards cutting my losses and buying the used motor ASAP.

it's a 125

my dealer is say that they can sell the motor for 300 with transmission and everything, then probably 150 to 200 for the labor to swap the two
