Genuine Buddy 50cc has trouble running after sitting

Post by jrottem46 »

I came across a used Genuine Buddy 50cc that has 1,100 miles on it. The stock exhaust is replace with an arrow exhaust. It has new tires and a new battery. The only problem is it's been sitting in storage for 2 years. We got it to start when I went to look at it, but it will shut off if it's idling. If you give it has it will keep running. Do you think a simple cleaning of the carb will clean it? Or do you think there is a bigger issue? I'm really considering buying for the low price it's at and fixing it up. What are your thoughts? I am looking at going back to see it again tonight.

After sitting so long, it may need a carburetor cleaning, but have you tried adjusting the idle speed?

Was it really put properly 'in storage' or was it parked one day and forgotten about for two years until they decided to put it for sale?

If its the latter, the gas has got to be varnish and it would be difficult- maybe impossible- to start and keep running. To determine if the scoot's worth your trouble, it has to at the least have fresh gas. You could hope for running it with fresh gas and some Seafoam but it probably needs a carb cleaning. If its not running right, make sure you get it for a big discount. And don't be too anxious to buy. There will be others that come along.

How old is it? It shouldn't have needed tires at 1100 miles unless it has a lot of years on it. Maybe they were dry rotted from being in storage for a lot longer than two years? (I'm a suspicious sort)

If it runs and doesn't idle, it's most likely a clogged pilot jet. Clean the carb, replace the fuel lines and fuel filter and make sure the tank is clean. Also check the air filter to make sure it's not dryrotting.
