Getting ready to purchase a policy.
I would like the group's input on which companies you use and how happy you are with them.
I know rates will be all over the place due to age, location, etc so no need to provide that.
So far I have a quote from:
- Progressive, only seels liability for me, so they are out.
- GEICO, $128.00/year for liability and comprehension, 250/500 coverage and a $250.00 deductible. Seems really cheap !
Geico was so cheap that it makes me wonder if their service is just terrible. Thus the reason for my question.
It is finally warming up. Probably 35-38 this weekend, so I am thinking in picking it up on Saturday!
I have a comprehensive policy from Progressive. I've never filed a claim, but the rates and coverage are great.
We have our car/trailer coverage with them, and two scooters and an MC. Usually if you have a car policy with someone, they'll give you a better rate.
I pay less than $300 a year for coverage for three bikes, currently a vintage Vespa, the Blur, and a vintage Honda MC, and that's for two riders (me and my wife). I needed to send appraisals for the vintage bikes.
A few years ago, some of my friends started getting $800 renewals for one vintage bike, saying their policies have changed, but our rates only went up $30 or so over the past several years.
They've been cool about switching policies (immediately, over the phone) between bikes as they've been bought and sold, or in and out of repair, and like most companies, they give discounts for over 25, married, garaged, winter layoff, AMA membership, MSF class, helmet, etc.
I own a couple other bikes that only run once in a while, If I'm riding one of them, I call and switch the policy to cover it, and it's covered right away. Of course if the uninsured bike is stolen while it's off the policy, i'm screwed, but usually if it's off the policy, it's in pieces all over the garage. You should keep your reliable/valuable bikes covered all the time.

i have farmers insurance. they provided the best rates when i compared them with the others (which saved me half of what i was paying). i had medical included in it, too, and its still cheap.
my entire plan with them is actually quite reasonable between car insurance, insurance for two scooters, and rental insurance.
You don't actually have farmers. They dont have motorcycle policies, they sell them to an another company who actually carries your policy.
I know this from a recent experience with them (a bad one). If anything happens they are quick to pass you off to this company you have never heard of. It is a heacache!!!
I called 3 insurance companys for quotes, including my own, and geico was by far the cheapest . The price and coverage was the same as yours. I cannot say if it is good because I have not needed to use it.

I think it's just a good bet for them, few people file claims for minor injuries or a scratched-up scooter (what with the $250 deductible), and scooters rarely cause a lot of damage (you're not going to total a Lexus if you drive into it with a scooter, nor are you going to go all Blues Brothers on a shopping mall.) So basically, they're banking on you not totalling it, killing a passenger, or getting it stolen, and since you're in your 30s, married, and living in Eden Prairie, your risk is pretty low.

I have Geico right now and pay about what the OP does for my scooter (no collision, no uninsured motorist). I've never had a claim with them on the scooter, but have had them for my auto ins for years and they've had great service.
Also, illnoise, going "Blues Brothers" on a shopping mall maybe can't be done with just one scoot but if we all got together...
You'll want to make sure you have some form of uninsured/underinsured coverage on your policy. This won't cover the bike, but your injuries/medical bills/lost time off work if the person who hits you has no insurance or not enough coverage to cover your claim for medical/time off work.
In Colorado Uninsured Motor Vehicle is only needed on one vehicle in your household. Then it covers all vehicles driven by members of the household. Guest drivers are only covered in the vehicle that actually has the coverage.
We have State Farm on everything. It helps to get better rates. Never a problem. The Buddy 50 insurance is $72/year. Liability 250/500 $22, Comprehensive $100 deductible $19, and Collision $100 deductible $31. Uninsured coverage would have been $40 more. Maybe it is less on a Buddy 50.
Guys, thanks for the input.
I am also having my agent give me a quote with the same company we have the cars and house.

30's, nice ! Try 40's
sailotot,
I did not see anything regarding medical coverage. I have heard you guys mentioned this in the past and I was looking for it, but on the www site, that was not an option when filling up the page to get a quote.
Maybe when you do it over the phone?
progressive. geico was twice the price for the exact same coverage.
as has been mentioned so very, very often: so much depends on where you live, age, credit record, other insurance with same company, coverage you choose, prior driving record, etc.

I actually work for GEICO in customer service. And I think that I do a good job! our cycleguard insurance is fantastic and is based out of Virginia Beach and Macon, Ga, so whenever you call, you will get southern hospitality at its finest! I highly recomend going with GEICO. I had Farmers for over 10 years, but the price and service stunk. GEICO is open 24/7 in service and claims. Check it out! You'll love the service, I promise!

You could also find a motorcycle insurance agency... let them find the best company for you. It just may be Geico I went that route and my best coverage came from progressive.

Yeah, like I said, GEICO has been great for me in the auto department (although currently Progressive is kicking your butt down here in FL for rates, but I've been burned by chasing the cheaper rate before).
GEICO for my scooter is different though- they aren't really the same company are they? I mean, they don't interface at all- in fact I don't even get a multi vehicle discount anymore. Is it like what jperkins said about Farmers, where my GEICO scooter policy is not really GEICO?
I have insurance with the Farm (that's what we call it here in SFheadquarterstown). I've had State Farm ins. the whole time I've been driving, and they've been great when folks in my family have had problems (including motorcycle accidents), so I've stuck with 'em. Can't recall the rate, but it seems a bit high, and I believe it's worth it.
Has anybody on Progressive had an accident and made a claim? How were they?

yeah, same company, just different policies. depending on the state that you live in, for example in California, there is a multi-policy discount. It depends on the regulations in your state. If anyone has any insurance ?'s, I'd be happy to help!

I just got my scooter this month. i got a quote from allstate yesterday they said it would be $600 for the year i thought that sounded like way to much from what i have herd from others in my area. so i called my brothers guy and he quoted me with progressive it ran up to $220 for the year. i think the key is to just shop around.
AllState is notorious for having bad motorcycle policy rates. Even good companys will have bad points. I think 1 yr on my Rattler came to $170 with full coverage (Progressive).
Here's my couple of cents, I had Geico for years on my cars and scoots. I moved out of state and the phone tag was unbearable when I tried to get the same coverage in another state.
I ended up over-paying because I couldn't figure how much I needed to pay. I visited a local office and was told, "Yeah, you're fine, we'll send you a check for the overage."
I didn't hear from them for months and then got a cancellation notice. They lost my paperwork. More time on the phone, more requests for statements.... nothing.
I ended up getting insurance from an agent with American Family because I know where he lives and he rides a scooter. I gave him everything... cars, scooters, house, and life insurance. I just wanted to be able to pick up the phone and talk to a person, not an automaton.
In the end, I'll pay more for personal service. I wasn't getting it from Geico.
Well, I ended up with Progressive. I had my insurance guy check with my existing carrier for the cars/house, etc and they do not have motorcycle/scooter insurance.
Dropped my comprehensive deductible to $100.00.
The 12 month policy came to $134.00.
Let's hope is a "waste of money" and I never, ever end up using it !
on the medical coverage question, my salesperson just asked us if we needed it. since we dont have medical insurance through work, we said yes. our total insurance costs each month with farmers are $101 (that is covering our 08 toyota xrunner, two 07 buddies, and renters insurance).
i think its a steal.
as for the mention of farmers not actually covering the scooter and it being through another company...i was unaware of that and am now interested in checking with my agent.

i think its a steal.
Never, ever move to Los Angeles. Depending on all the aforementioned factors, most people pay $150-$200 for comprehensive. It's just nuts.
My auto and home insurance doesn't do mototcycles or scoots.
I have Geico but may be switching to AIS, where my wife got a far better rate than what was offered by either Geico, Progressive or anyone else we contacted. The quotes we got for her—for the same coverage—varied by as much as $600 a month. this convinced me the whole thing's a crap shoot.

Whether you do or not, get it. Scooters are easy to steal and easy to crash and you don't want to be making payments on a bike you haven't seen for two years.

I have progressive after being rejected from allstate for a haunting driving incident. My fault and don't blame them....feel pretty lucky they didn't drop my car. So, progressive took me for approx. $350.00/yearly. Again, feeling lucky I could get any policy!!!!
