Do all of the Genuine top cases have the same lock and key?

Post by hcstrider »

Yesterday while installing a Genuine top case on my wife’s Buddy, I noticed that the key for her top case looked exactly like the key for my top case. Sure enough, the key for my Buddy’s top case locked/unlocked her top case and the key for her top case locked/unlocked mine. Since I purchased my top case from Scooter World in Kansas City in June 2007 and I purchased her top case from Motorsport Scooters in San Diego in February 2008 it seems like it is more than just a coincidence that we have the same lock and key for our top case.

It is not a big deal and actually I kind of like that we both have the same lock/key because that means that even if I lose my key we still have spare keys. I would also like it if we had the same ignition key.

I was just curious if all Genuine top cases have the same lock and key?

I don't have a top case, but I do remember reading that with any buddy key you are able to open the under seat storage.

that is true but you can't start the engine with any key (thankfully). As far as the top boxes... I believe that the givi cases and vespa cases you have to have the specific key made for that particular case but with the buddy i can't remember. The buddy's top cases (most top cases for that matter) are not the most secure so I wouldn't put many valuables in there. It is a good solution for extra storage though :)

Genuine Top Case

Okay, I know they're "cute" and "match my Buddy" and blah, blah, BLAH - but do yourselves a favor and buy a nicer topcase! Everyone knows (but won't admit) that these Genuine cases are crap. Thank God my dealer talked me out of it and into a nice Givi for only about $25 more. The Givi is better built, more sturdy, and I love the "quick release" button. Just unlock the case, push in a lever, and it comes off the rack that quickly! This is a great feature if you plan on parking your scoot outside for any length of time. Need I also mention it's adaptability for a brake light kit install? :P

I highly doubt that anyone would argue about Givi being better quality top case :)

That is exactly why I purchased the Genuine top case. There are a lot of excellent choices for the rear rack: Genuine top case, Givi top case, SX top case bag, Prima Saddle Bag, wire basket, etc… Each of these choices offered some feature not available on the other choices. I looked at all of these excellent options and decided that for me the Genuine top case was the look that I wanted.

Givi makes a good quality top case and it sounds like you made a good choice. How does the brake light kit work with the quick release button? Do the brake light wires also detach?

Well, I went to the dealership and told them that Modern Buddy members noticed that one key can open all topcases. THey said that wasnt true, and then they took a key and tried to open several cases- I didnt work, now I dont know if maybe they were not doing it right, but the one key only worked on the one top case- I dont know, but maybe the newer top cases are individually keyed? What do you think?

Yes, you detach the brake light wire before removing the top case. Simple maneuver, and the wire tucks right into the seat compartment. :D

that's funny because i somehow locked my keys in my 07 underseat and tried to use my wifes 06 keys just to open seat and it wouldn't work, i had to take the front off of the bike to pull the little cable behind the ignition switch :)

Thanks for talking to your dealer about this. I guess that I just happened to get 2 top cases that had the same lock/key.

You'd be amazed where an identical lockset can pop up. There are probably only four or five pins in that lock with maybe 8 different pin lengths so the combinations are limited. That lock probably isn't limited to Genuine brand cases either.
