Anyone else use Zipcar?

Post by RabidChild »

If you don't know it's a car sharing service where they have cars parked around the city and you can reserve and pay for as little as 1 hour at a time.

I've started using it recently after ditching my car about a month ago and it looks like it is a great option for someone who lives in one of their markets and wants to ditch their car (or maybe get rid of the 2nd car). It's pretty expensive if you're going to use it very often, but you don't have to pay for insurance or gas, and if you use it like me, for a few hours on the weekend here and there you may want to look into it.

What a great service. Here in Cleveland, we have City Wheels http://www.mycitywheels.com/ . We thought we would use it when we sold the second car for scooters. It has been 2 years and we have managed fine with bus and walking as back up in bad weather. Still it is a great service and I hope to support the business at some point.

In Seattle, Zipcar just merged with (read: bought) Flexcar, another car-sharing service. Flexcar was far superior in the customer-service department, but my overall opinion of car-share services is pretty high - I can get around every day by scooter, and for those occasional trips to IKEA, I just reserve a Zipcar.

Scooter + Zipcar = best of all worlds, really.

I looked into that here in Los Angeles—with both Flexcar and Zipcar. There are Flexcar spots in our office's garage downtown. Unfortunately, there aren't any stops where I live in North Hollywood. As with a lot of things in LA, the city's too spread out to work for a lot of us.

I-Go is another real similar service in chi town at least, and they have a lot of cities as well. Seems to be bigger in my immediate area, north side of Chicago.

We are one car one scooter family and I have given some thought to it. Gotten stopped by the $75 yearly fee. But I-Go just got a plan that lets you only pay when you use it, vs paying a monthly fee. So I am getting closer, especially if we have winters like this one past, with so much darn snow! Buddy did not ride for 2 months!

(Back in the game now

I've been using Zipcar for several years here in the Boston area. I don't use it a lot - a handful of times a year, but one of the things I like about it is that you get to try out a bunch of different cars. With them I've taken a Mini Cooper convertible for a spin, tried out a Prius, a Volvo, and a Honda Element (the last of which was covered in Ikea ads which made it a few bucks cheaper per hour). We have one car but my wife uses it for her commute so there have been a few times when having access to a second car came in handy. (...though the mini convertible and prius were just for fun).

They even have a Mustang convertible somewhere in Boston I think...
