Fresh start

Post by Sparky »

My first week with my Metro 125 has not been the most endearing I've had with a new scooter. Plate delays, speedometer issues, the Saturday from Hell where I bent a rear rim and wiped out going in for a warranty repair, and failure of the speedo after leaving the dealer...

Sometimes one suspects the Powers that Be are sending a message.

On the other hand, today I got news from the vehicle registration office that my scooter has been entered into the system. I also stopped by my dealer for a second go at the speedometer cable. We decided to loctite it under the headset to ensure no further problems. While I was there, I was able to oggle several scooters--ranging from a Ruckus to a Metro to a modern Vespa--along with several of the prettier female drivers. Riding home I saw the speedo and odo were finally doing their job.

And I broke into a huge grin when, turning off the rush hour trudge of Decarie, I plunged into the shadows of a Montreal neighbourhood side street. It took me a moment to figure out the reaction. It is a sense memory of a ride I took a few years ago on my Vino 125 to Ayers Cliff in the Eastern Townships. Passing Lake Memphramagog, I went from early summer's heat to the cool of shadows while hunting curves on a two-lane provincial highway. That day I spent watching bluegrass bands and people out at a country fair.

Same exact sensation. The sudden chill of heat being replaced by coolness on my riding jacket. A promise of what, despite all the problems I've had, Kermit promises me once that magical first oil change is done. A fresh start.

I've never seen a buddy have this many problems all in one time period and being a brand new bike.

Not too sure what your importer does to the bikes when they uncrate, but genuine scooters here in the US, does alot, and even the dealers prep and check the bikes from the ground up.

Luckily you have a nice warranty that'll cover all your problems, pgo is a nice company :)

that's a great attitude. It would be easy to be really annoyed... so much of how we perceive life is how we react to it.. glad the scooter makes you smile now.

It may come from being the absolute first owner. I got the first one out there. Heck, it was the model being shown at our local motorcycle show! The importers may not have experience with it, so I'm a bit of a test subject here.

On the other hand, the speedo cable issue is really the only *technical* problem that can be accounted to the scooter itself. The plate kerfuffle is bureaucracy in action. The rear rim bendage and crash were bad luck and dicy conditions. Otherwise, the scooter is solid and isn't leaking any oil. Considering it has been through a lowside and came out with only cosmetic damage, I'm pleased with the durability.
