Who is your Buddy insured by?

Post by sargelee71 »

Hi everyone,

I currently have State Farm Insurance for the car. I would love to hear from people about who your scoot is insured by, suggestions on policy, etc. I'm hearing lots of ads on the radio about Geico Motorcycle Insurance. Want good coverage, but am trying to same $ to accessorize!!! Kidding...on the accessorizing part.

Thanks!

you might want to check out this post: www.modernbuddy.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... =insurance

I asked a similar question a little while back.

I have everything;
coverages are 250,000/500,000
deductibles $100.00
theft
additional accesories coverage up tp $3,000 (windscreen, jacket, helmets, etc)

I pay $136.00 per year. In my case, taking the minimum coverage it was a difference of $6/month. That is two Starbucks/month I can live without and get the insurance topped off.

I use Nationwide, $75 a year to cover two scoots!
But I do get extra discounts since all my insurance needs are with them, car, home & etc. Plus I've been using the same agent fro more that 25 years. Works for me!

I have a question along the same lines: In what order do I need to get insurance/get a loan/pick up the scoot?

It's my understanding that I can buy the scooter without having insurance (not that I would ride it without), but I'll need to get a loan first so that's my first step.

The second step is the confusing part... can I get insurance for a scooter that I don't even own yet? Don't I have to have the title to get it insured? Does that make picking up the scooter the second step?

And finally, if the previous is true then I suppose the third step would be getting the scooter insured.

Do those seem like appropriate steps in anyone's experience?

usually i just get the loan first and then take car/bike/whatever down to the insurance office within a day or two of actually getting the car/bike/whatever. but if you want to get insurance first, you'll need the vin # to give to your insurance and then just the description of it too. shouldn't be a problem.

Cool, thanks brimstone. The tricky part now is just finding time away from work to do so.

i know one thing i've done before is call them and ask them if they'll cover it. i know for a truck i bought years ago, my agent took the info over the phone. but it's a fairly small city and i've been with them for 16 years or so. you might try that too, and then take it down once you have your scoot on hand.

Ours is through State Farm. Total coverage for $200/year.
We also insure our home & cars with them. That when the discounts start clicking in.

Regarding loan info, it really depends on how you plan to finance. I have a feeling the easiest way is to finance through your dealer if you are buying new. You may also pay a high interest rate for the priviledge (I really got screwed on my motorcycle!)

Check with your dealer about what financing options they offer.

As far as what order to proceed...
Pick the scoot
purchase the scoot - get vin#
call insurer with vin# to obatin insurance.
Commence scooting!

I have www.fernet.com

Had never heard of them, Chelsea, Scoot Richmond recommended 'em.
I love them. Full coverage, theft also, low deductible, and just $75 for the year. They are a motorcycle insurance company only.

Badbrains, what heavy petting said is also what I did.
I called my agent to let him know to start the policy before I picked it up and he e-mailed me the policy so I had the insurance at that very moment. They do need the VIN#. I mailed him a check that he got probably a couple days later. Been with him for a few years now. Not sure if you go to a new guy if they would do that, although there is no risk to them. If you were to crash and they did not received your money, the policy would not be in effect and you would be in the hole.

Since I have state farm for the cars etc., they cover anything I buy as soon as I sign the deal - my agent says as long as I get to his office in 14 days, its covered even though he hasnt written the policy -
That being said, I rode the scooter to my insurance office on Day 2 & did the policy.

Yeah... its the joys of living only 30 miles from Chicago - a friend just bought a Ruckus - lives in Freeport (kind of by Rockford) & he is paying $80 a year.

I had a similar situation with Farmers Ins. My agent tells me that I'm automatically covered for 30 days when I buy a new vehicle. So I bought my buddy and rode it home, then called my agent to give him the info and rode it to his office the next day so he could take a photo.
