What would happen?

What would happen if I waited to get my 1st oil change @ 1000miles?
Did anyone else wait this long?
Keeping in mind...my buddy has NO warranty.

But I'm wondering ... do you ask because you're already close to 1000 miles?

Your buddy will be hurt and in pain from sludgy oil if you wait that long, that's why people get theirs done at 200/300 miles.

It isnt just for warranty purposes, but to keep the engine with fresh and clean oil.

I dont think you buddy would die, I went to a vespa dealer once, and he told me a story about a customer who never got oil changes and his et4 died after 4000 miles from no oil changes, they had to clean everything because the oil sludged, but they got the bike back to life.

You can kinda see the metal flecks in the oil, the swirl patterns. You really need to change all the oil, engine & gear. This applies to all engines. The metal flecks are from all of the burrs on the machined surfaces created during the manufacturing process. If they stay suspended in the oils they can act like sand paper. We all know what sand paper does to a smooth surface.

Hopefully there will not be any damage to the engine later on. You should be fine but I would highly recommend getting the oils changed.

Yes about 850.

It's not like I'm not planning to change it. I was just curious.
I am planning on taking it to the local dealer and have a once over done on it.

I'm still needing my first oil change at 2800 miles

it's not reccomended but the little guy can handle it. I still keep up with sportbikes so I figure I'll get around to it around fall 2010

Yeah, especially since the first oil change is kinda a big deal. Plus it only takes like 15 minutes.

If people dont want to change their oil when they're supposed to, then let them find out what happens down the road, middle of nowhere, and no cell service!

Hmmm, maybe I did mine backwards. First oil change at 1500 miles, second at 2000. Isn't that right?

Second time the oil was considerably cleaner than the first...

I asked my dealer the last time I, was in, and they said it should not need to be done untill 2000 miles.

For the FIRST oil change? Wow, that's the longest duration I've ever heard recommended and much longer than what Genuine recommends.

It really should be done at 100 miles and then at 500 and 1000, then per the specs... don't do what I did and put it off, it's not good for the engine.

Here's the last we heard from Genuine re: intervals:

The optimum schedule is this for Buddy 125 and Blur is the following:

Change oil and perform first service at 200 miles. This includes a valve clearance inspection. Scooter people aren't typically familiar with valves, but people who are experienced with motorcycles (and four stroke engines in general) know this is a part of regular maintenance.

After the first oil change, you can go 1,000-1,500 miles (I recommend 1,000) if you use regular oil. If you use synthetic, you can go 1,500-2,000 miles between oil changes (I recommend 1,500).

Inspect the valve clearance every 4,000 miles, adjust if necessary.
-The standard valve spacing is between 0.06 â€“ 0.10mm with engine off.
-When the spacing is too small, idle speed will become unstable and you can burn up the valves.

-When the spacing is too large, loud noise will occur and the scooter will run poorly.

This is all in miles, and straight from the factory.

Now, Brett had previously said 300-500 for the first oil change and most mechs and dealers seem to agree that somewhere around 500-600 is best for the first oil change. The following intervals are for after that first change, so second change at 1500 + 500 or 600 miles. And so on.

I'm going to post this to the Tech Library for future reference!

So, we have to ask. Have you changed the oil yet? (not only is it not good for the engine, but waiting that long certainly voids one of the best scooter warranties around)

lol not yet but I'm still not terribly worried, there's no change in the sound of the engine yet so the Buddy is a pretty stout little scoot. I'll go grab a filter tonight though since I'll probly catch a ton of flack now that everyone knows

maybe change out the oil this weekend.

The engine probably has some wear to it because of those metal chips grinding it down. But if it still runs good, that just shows how good PGO's engineering is.

does anybody have experience with inspecting their own valve clearance? I used to do my own on my VW bug, I imagine their are some similarities.

lol nah, small changes in the engine are easy to hear if you know what you're looking for. I used to tell when my Audi was a half quart low by the sound of the valves. It helps if full synthetic is used also.
