Looking for a Scooter
I'm currently in the market for a scooter and am looking at a Buddy. I'm about a 240 lbs. male and am just looking for something to get me to and from work. Would a Buddy 50 do me fine?? A dealer somewhere flat out told me 'A 50 wouldn't do you any good.' As I said I'm not looking to win the Indy 500. Just a nice, economical ride to work.

I think a 125 is your best bet, 50cc only goes to 30mph, and you know how everyone else drives, they'll go 40+mph on 35mph roads. You can get the bike de-restricted, but really, even then, your max speed will be 40-45mph. I think a 125 is your best bet, the 125 wouldnt win the indy 500 either, but it's more agile in the city.

I use the 125 for a 3 mile commute to work. It's fast enough in a 45 mph speed limit that I don't hold up traffic, and that's important to me. Plus the acceleration of the 125 makes me happy every single time I give it the gas.
If you're in a city with speed limits of 25 the 50 should suit you fine, but if you want to use it in speed zones that are higher, or want to break out on it for an occasional 'fun ride' as well, the 125 fits the bill.
Get the 125. You won't regret it.

Remember you shouldn't ride a 50cc full throttle at 30 mph all the time.
Get a 125cc or 150cc (if you have a color preference); you're only going to buy one so get one that will meet your needs and open up your area of riding with the ability to go a little faster when you need to.
If you start out with a 50cc be prepared that you will probably won't something with a little more power.
Physically there isn't much difference between a Buddy 50cc and a Buddy 125cc.

Bear in mind, though, that a 125 cc scooter will require a motorcycle license to ride. Also, your scooter will have to meet the the same registration and insurance and parking rules and regulations and whatever else your state and locality imposes on motorcycles. I think it's worth it, as everyone above says, but you should take this into account as part of your decision-making process.
