Oregon Riders-please help!!!

Post by Alix B »

Hey y'all

So there is this stuff called "June Gloom" on the West coast. It's a big cloud of moisture from the Pacific Ocean. I'm re-evaluating my route from San Fran to Eugene, OR.

Temperatures on the coast are cold and damp. I want to cut inland for warmeth-here are the questions:

What is Old Pacific Hwy 99 like? google doesn't want to send me on it, so I'm inclined to believe it has a high top speed. But is it heavily trafficked?

It runs a long Interstate 5 starting near the CA/OR border. What is Interstate 5 like? I would avoid it as much as possible, but taking it here and there sure does limit some detours!

Please help! :D

Highway 99 is sometimes part of I-5, sometimes a 2 or 4 lane road. Maximum speed in OR on the Interstate and other roads is 55 mph, so, technically, you could ride your Buddy 125. Honestly, though, having driven that stretch of interstate many times over the years, I wouldn't ride a little Buddy 125 on it. It's full of tractor trailers, is often only 2 lanes on either side, and the posted 55 still carries most cages at 70 - 75. You don't want to get pinched between a speeding SUV and a trailer truck flying down the grade toward Ashland at absolute top speed on your little bike. One wrong application of the brakes could be your end. If you choose to take that route, please wear full protective gear (FF helmet, armored pants, gloves and jacket, and boots).

Have fun. I recommend you allow for some extra time and ride the coastal highway. June Gloom doesn't make it that cold.

99 isn't terrible, you'll be far enough in so you won't need to worry about coastal weather. 99 and I5 are also sometimes the same road, there's a few mountian passes along the way but the only way to avoid those are to take a slower route like 101 up the coast (which will take a million years because it's twisty and filled with camper trailers) otherwise you'd need to head into the desert and come in through Nevada and then into Eastern Oregon.

If you're not on a tight schedule, I'd say 101 would be your best bet.
I don't do much modding on the scoot anymore, just riding :-)

Do the 101. I have always wanted to do the 101.
