Made it to work!!!! Yeah!!!

Post by chancerbeans13 »

Today was my first official ride out of the neighborhood. I rode to work this morning, and I'm not sure if the gods parted the road or what, but for some reason, there were very few cars...lol...I'm actually kinda glad for my first ride. The scoot ran great, and actually pulled away from most cars that I did encounter. It is still well within the breakin period with a grand total of 33.8 miles logged now!

I have even less mileage than you, ventured out of the immediate neighborhood for the first time on Tuesday, I felt confident on the road in moving traffic, was most uncomfortable when it was stop and go (with cars rolling up quickly from behind) I've actually tried to keep my Buddy 50 under 30 mph or so but had to goose it a bit, I'm concerned too about proper break-in but was near forty on the speedo a couple of times, it would actually help if I knew what top speed was to know that I'm at 50% or 75% etc.

There are several different thoughts of how you should break-in engines. Some say slow and easy, some say run it like you are going to run it, I took it easy for about the first 10 miles, and it felt a little sluggish. Then, I started pumping up the speed a little, and I tell you, I can definitely feel a little more pep in the scoot.

Forgot to say, the MOST IMPORTANT thing that I have found about breaking it in (through forums) is you MUST change your throttle constantly. It is not good to ride at a constant throttle for an extended amount of time until you get the scoot broke in.

Cool! One thing I found to be very hairy was getting on Arlington Expressway. Coming out of the shopping center across from the mall that has office depot, comp usa and woodcraft, trying to get back to Parker. You have to merge quickly into traffic. But like me, you'll probably find ways around that.

When is your appt at the DL next week?

When I was there monday getting my endorsement added they said they've been slammed, and the guy at the counter sounded like appts were the wy to go. I think you can make them on myflorida.com. Did you get my directins? I hope they were helpful.

My 50 tops at 45 consistantly on a flat.....47 with zero wind. Hit 48 with a bit of throttle left as I was drafting behind a truck this morning. I so badly wanted to hit 50mph but that darn truck just wouldn't speed up.

I weigh 165lbs, add gear and small backpack = 175lbs.

No modifications yet but plan on a windshield, pipe and sliders some day........

Come on, get out there and let er rip!

I think on my first day I did 70mph on it haha. Bad idea I know, however before my buddy I owned a Kawasaki Ninja 500, so it brought me back some memories being on two wheels again.

Congrats and ride safe.

I'm picking up a black buddy 50 on Saturday. I've read tons of stuff here, and thanks to all the knowledgeable folks I'm getting a lot of "book knowledge" about safety, maintenance and riding in general. Glad I stumbled on this forum.

Last weekend I put in some time on a borrowed Kymco, and I'll have this weekend to do some local/low speed getting acquainted. I do want to commute to work -- this week I've been working out backroad routes to work in the car (adds a mile or two to my 11 mile commute, and might add 10 minutes). When I'm comfortable enough I'll be commuting on the nice days.

I've been kind of a scooter fan for a long time, ever since college when a few hipsters had old Vespas, and I'm looking forward to getting out of a car and into the world.

Occasionally in the past I'd consider getting an MC, but neither the Harley dudes OR the dentist-looking BWM dudes OR the flip-flops and 1000cc's sport bike dudes seemed like where I belonged.

Scootering is much more my speed, it looks like, and if I need more speed I could see just getting a bigger scooter eventually. Right now it seems like 50cc's gives me exactly what I need.
