Oil, again....

Post by jmsmith802 »

My oil tank on my buddy 50 looks like its gunna be needing a top off pretty soon.. the dealer filled it up initially with the motul oil, and its what they suggested i use. But, once they showed me the price tag for a tiny bottle of it
i wondered if it really is worth they money.. Instead i went to another store and bought Castrol 2t motorcycle oil, which was a large bottle at a good price. SO, my question- Is the synthetic motul oil really better than the castrol oil i bought, and what are the advantages (if any) because i dont see what is so good about this motul stuff?

I dunno, I've used just about everything from iPone to Wesson in my old bikes and I've never seen any difference. But there probably is one.

With 2-stroke oil, more expensive oils include detergents to prevent carbon build up on your cylinder/piston, and to make sure they mix more evenly with the gas (not sure if that's a big deal with autolube), and to make sure they burn away evenly and produce lower emissions, and to keep your seals from 'sploding. (few people know that scooters are powered by tiny, fragile aquatic mammals). Weedwhacker oil will work fine, but it will probably pollute more, require more frequent decarbonizations, and minimally reduce the life of your engine. I try to use the good stuff when I can, but if I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere and all I can find is lawnmower oil, I have no problem using the cheap stuff if it's going to get me home.

Synthetic is arguably better, but probably not critical. Some people say that mixing them will create a vortex in reality that will suck you into a parallel universe inhabited by giant insects, but I've mixed them a few times. My engines have all blown up at one time or another, but I'm blaming the fact that they're 35 years old, not the 2-stroke oil.

More importly, you should be using royal purple in your lawnmower.

So, in short, if you care about your bike and want it to last forever, it's probably worth the investment (What's $6 every month or two?). If you are stealing dog food from the pet shelter to make ends meet, you're probably not going to die if you use cheaper oil, but stick to that maintenance schedule and look out for carbon build up.

That wasn't very scientific. Or organized. Can I go home now?

Another note, buying overpriced oil at your dealer makes your dealer happy, and he will return the favor, possibly by remaining in business long after President Obama lowers gas prices and no one wants scooters anymore.

If you hate your dealer, and America, you can find Motul and BelRay and iPone hella cheaper on the internets, in bulk.
