MAN, I came close this morning!! Needle was half way into the red. Only 9 miles to work, thought I'd make it. Is it just me or does the last part of the tank seem to go much quicker then when it's full? Passed 2 gas stations thinking I had enough. Looked down on Clague Road and the needle was resting against the 'empty peg'.
Thought I was doomed for sure. Eased up on the throttle. Started talking to BB. "Come on girl. We're almost to the next station. Come on buddy..."
..turned the corner
"not far now, there it is, girl. Hang on... "
And I made it. Stunned that I didn't run out. The needle was on that empty peg for at least 3 miles!!
I've driven up to my house and then looked down to see I was empty--and I mean needle past the end of the meter empty. But I think my scooter's a bit overdramatic, since there was definitely a centimeter or so of gas left in the tank when I checked, and I had enough to ride 6 miles to the nearest gas station.
Other than that, no problems--although I used the excuse to explain being late for a meeting a couple of weeks ago, haha.
I've not yet run out of gas on my Stella. Yes, she has a reserve tank, but even then, I've had her down to nearly bone dry and still got miles and miles.
I know it will happen. I am lazy. It's why I keep a small gas can in my cage, er, car, so I can at least walk to get some gas.
Oddly enough, that gas can would be nearly a fill up on the scooter
I can get around 10 miles+ with the needle pegged on empty.
That said my first day I rode around a hundred miles and ran out of gas. It was definitely an embarassing learning experience. I'm not sure which was worse, the two mile roundtrip walk or having to balance the 5 gallon loaner gas can on the floorboard with my feet sticking out on the way to return it. Not fun on the first day.
Yeah, I've run out of gas. One morning a few weeks ago, I noticed the tank meter was in the red as I started up to head for work, and made a mental note to stop at the station I pass about halfway through the drive. But you know that happy carefree feeling you get when you're riding? Yeah, I get to have that feeling most mornings. I passed that station right up without a thought. Then, about 5 miles later, I passed the station that's just 5 blocks from work. Then I pulled into work and stalled and remembered my low tank! Had a great workout pushing the scooter a block or so to another station and felt great about the whole thing
Darn close one time.
Left work and the needle was already into the red.
By the time I got home -9 miles mostly 55 mph,
I looked at the gauge and it was showing completely empty.
I opened up the gas cap and there couldn't have been more than a half a cup left in the tank.
From now on when it's into the red I'm going to visually check the level before starting out.
I ran out of gas about a week ago right as I was pulling into my girlfriend's driveway while trying to look super smooth. In my defense, I was honestly trying to see how far I could go on an "empty" tank of gas, but I didn't quite think my cunning plan all the way through... I left both of my spare gas tanks at my house. There's not many things quite as shameful and telling as walking on the side of the road with a new one gallon gas tank in your hand.

Texas there is crude oil, pipelines everywhere. But gas in a tank for my tank. No. I would run out of gas, a kind soul would fill me up and then I would almost run out of gas again. Often pulling into a station on the last mile. Thats about 240 miles without seeing a gas station.
Ask not if I want to carry an extra gas tank.
I don't. I don't like the idea of it and have no where for it.
Oh, and Kansas, that's another place without appropriate gas stations.
But I sure have met some great people in the process.
THe longest distance I've pushed is 1 mile. That sucked, what with all the gear!
I ran out of gas in Kansas in 2005. I was returning from a Sportster Rally in Missouri. I used my map to locate refueling spots, but the town I planned to gas up in had died. So had the next two towns on the highway!
Remember, you can't depend on the town to still be in existence, or to have a operating gas station.
I almost did, or at least I got closer to understanding the gas gauge on the Buddy.
First time I rode it into work. I left the house with exactly 1/4 tank, and 1 block from work (about 10 miles), it was pegged on empty. I continued on to work, and at the end of the day, looked inside and there was the reflection of something in there liquid. So I rode to the station a mile up the road.
Maybe my Buddy's got abandonment issues, I dunno, but that was the first time I had to put gas in it. So that was awkward too... "Just a gallon?!" the guy in the SUV next to me asked. I smiled and told him where the local scoot store was. I don't think I stopped smiling the rest of the day.
Yes, I did as related on Modern Buddy somewhere else. I pushed my luck and pushed the Budd up the hill and coasted down to the gas station. It took 1.642 gallons at the Shell station to fill it up.
