I'm kind of awed that this thread ever took a turn to the obnoxious or the "dark side."

Whatever anyone else thinks, I think we have the most respectful bunch of people here.

Good job, MBers!

The first time I ate those Morningstar nuggets, I had a moment of panic and dug the box out of the trash to read the ingredients. I haven't eaten meat in about 10 years, but from what I remember, DAMN that tasted like real chicken!

My mom is tiny. My dad passed away so she lived with my brother and his wife, they are vegans, my brother eats non meats because of health reasons, and his wife is a vegan for religious reasons.
My mom dropped to under 80 lbs living with them – she moved and now eats a broader diet including meat, she now weighs in at about 95 lbs; she now looks like she will survive.

I was a vegetarian for about 8 years, part of college and afterwards. I did everything wrong, rarely cooking at home and relying on quick fixes. Fortunately, this was in my late teens-mid 20s, when my body was much more resilient and I could survive off donuts, cigarettes and coffee for days. Anyway, I found myself largely subsisting off bean burritos, vegetable platters and the like. In those days there were few options in restaurants and even the frozen foods section. It's much easier now, but to do it well and right you really need to strive for a well-rounded diet and think beyond the basic need for protein. After a few years as my life settled after college, I really dove into doing a lot more cooking. Despite the increase in options these days, I think this is still very important if you're going vegetarian.

Why did I quit? I was seduced. I gave in to bad influences. I was tempted and I was weak. It was a lamb curry that started me back on the path...

Yeah, the only time I've "fallen off the wagon" was for lamb. It was a bit too rich for my system. Although it could have been the Gin...

I was in Italy for a little while and while I was learning to speak (which I can barely do poorly these days) I asked my teacher how to say I was vegetarian. She gave me a few words and phrases and I went out into the world.

Every word and phrase for vegetarian I used resulted in looks of Che? and/or a plate of prosciutto (which I was informed is not meat because they don't cook it). I always think of that when people bring up the Lamb joke from Greek Wedding. :)

I've been vegetarian & pescatarian for most of my adult life. Every once in a long while, usually in the winter, I eat chicken. I just wanted to offer my two cents here to point out that going vegetarian won't necessarily make you lose weight.

i was going to bring this up as well...I know several vegetarians who are not "thin".

and, actually, despite the stereotype of vegetarians being skinny, pastey, undernourished and weak, all of the vegetarians I know in real life are muscular (ok, 2 are overweight, but still muscular) and healthy in appearance.

I would even go so far as to say that a lot of people, maybe even most, gain weight. At least while they adjust their eating habits.

I fell off the wagon today after stocking my fridge with fish and veggie alternatives. I even brought an alternative meal to work.

Someone mentioned Chik Fil A in the hall and I got that mad bad craving for the ChiknStrip Salad...

*sigh*

I'll get back on the wagon now.
Yes, it's fast. No, you can't ride it.

I second this. When I (and most of my friends) went veggie in junior high and neither us nor our parents understood well-balanced vegetarian eating, and we all gained weight. I gained 10 lbs surviving off of Kraft mac and cheese and school nachos. However, we all went vegan eventually with the same abandon for what was healthy (no fat at all) and lost the vegetarian weight and much more.
Don't worry, I gained mine back haha. :P
