Someone STOLE MY Buddy!!!!!!!

Post by breathedeeply »

Sad but true. My fiancee and I purchased a cream Buddy 50 last summer and saved up to buy a new green one this summer. I just picked it up Monday afternoon and ended up staying over at a friend's house that evening. That same night, someone came to our house and stole his scooter. (It had to have been someone who new where we keep it b/c it was not visible from the road)
Called the police early the next day and the scooter was actually found that morning wrecked into some trees several miles away. Thank god the new Buddy I had just bought earlier that day was not here or they probably would have taken it to. It is totaled and thankfully we have renter's insurance that will help us replace it but not without a hefty deductible. So sad.
Our back gate now has a new lock and I am having a heavy duty cable made so that we can lock the scooters together and then to a pole in our backyard. Apparently scooters are being stolen like mad lately so make sure you are aware that there are lots of people who want your Buddy!! I will now be locking my rear tire too where ever I go~[/img]

That totally sucks!

Are you in Louisville? There is a LOT of scooter theft in Louisville!

Sorry to hear about this. Good, I guess, that you're not totally scooterless now. Yep—lock that baby up!

Your renter's insurance covered it? You're lucky, (well, not THAT lucky, but you know what I mean.) Most renters' insurance wouldn't even consider replacing a motor vehicle!

Our renters insurance wouldn't cover it and our vehicle insurance wouldn't cover it because it was only 50 cc.

Well, you're in CO where 50s fall into that void. That's the price you pay for not having to register them or have a license I guess. You can imagine why an insurance company wouldn't be interested in insuring an unregistered bike ridden by an unlicensed driver...

In most states, 50s need titles and plates and their own insurance.

That just bites. Like Illnoise said, you can take some solace that your renter's insurance will cover some of the costs to replace it.
Lock them up ! Do a search for the XENA lock. There was (might still be) a special deal for MB members!

Sorry to see your first thread had to be about your stolen Buddy.

WELCOME aboard ! :D

Well it turns out that our insurance rep. may have been wrong. Called to get the claim processed this morning and a "claims rep" called and said it is not covered. I told her that my agent said it would be and so she is currently looking into it. I don't understand why it would be any different than a mountain bike, guitar or whatever. Fact is, we had something that we worked hard for, someone stole it and made it useless, it should be covered. We'll see (fingers crossed and awareness heightened)

I wouldn't say most states. In MA it needs a title and a registration sticker, but no plates or insurance.

That's part of the reason I went with the 125, but I have the plate on Dual Lock so I can snatch it off the bike when I need to park on a sidewalk.

ugh that sucks. Sorry to hear it.

My girlfriend thinks I go a little overboard with the locks but I'm not willing to take any chances. I always lock our bikes together or to something immovable even if I'm just stepping into the grocery store. All it takes is a van and two burly guys to make off with a scooter that isn't locked down.

I think trying to play the system to make it work both ways like that is a bit questionable, but hey... :?
Huh? What just happened?

i have a 50cc buddy and i had no problem getting insurance... full comprehensive with a 100$ deductible.. for only about 100 a year. Pretty nice i thought, and gives me peace of mind when parking it...

There's a system?

OK, I wanted to seem like a real bad-A, but I have yet to install the Dual Lock. I've parked on the sidewalk in four different towns and have yet to be bothered by the MAN.

South Boston (within view of the diner)
Cambridge (locked to a sign)
Scituate (please, they don't even have meters and I didn't want to take a whole spot)
Hull (same situation as Scituate)

I've also been just waved around the gate at a couple parking garages. One at a major hospital and another at a high-rise building. Guess they don't want me taking up a whole space when I can fit the scoot under some duct work in spots that won't work for even the smallest car.

AND - the theft of your buddy totally blows. Glad the insurance covered most of it. My deductible won't go below $300.

My insurance broker told me it was covered under our personnel property as part of our renter's insurance. Still waiting to hear from the claims dept. Will keep you posted.
