leaky buddy after strapping into pickup

Post by mybetty »

well, i took betty up to the beautiful blue ridge parkway for camping and riding! my boyfriend and i strapped her into the back of his pickup (something he does regularly with his suzuki sv650) so i could avoid having to ride on interstate on the trip. unloaded her at campsite and had only driven about 10 miles when we stopped at an overlook. it was there we noticed a pretty significant amount of oil on only the left side of rear wheel and all in the left rim. i would assume it was gear oil overflow like lots of folks have had trouble with, but i had that service over 300 miles ago and have done some pretty hard riding since then. got in touch with my shop and they said i should clean it up and keep and eye on it, and stop riding it if i noticed any changes in performance (besides slippery back tire on curvy mountain roads....awesome combo :( ). stopped every 10 miles or so to check, and it continued to leak. she is riding fine, but took her to the shop this morning for a good clean, tightening and fluid check, and they said everything looks ok, but to keep an eye on it. my boyfriend thinks strapping her down may have caused the leak, but i have no idea!!
any ideas??

I was just driving the Blue Ridge parkway last Thursday on my way home from Statesville. Wow! The only thought I had, while taking in all the color, was "I can't wait to come back and do this on my Buddy." So aside from worrying about the oil issues, how was the ride? With the speed limit at 35-45, I'm sure it was a blast. Here's one of the photos I took...

I apologize for taking your post another direction. I was just so excited to hear about the BRP that I forgot what your original question was. Unfortunately, I don't have any ideas on the leak for you. I'm sure you'll get some opinions very quickly though.

I don't meant to hijack either, because I don't know the answer to the leak question; but that's an absolutely gorgeous photo, SteMer.

other than being stressed about my oil issues, it was an absolutely wonderful ride!! the views were so beautiful you could easily drive off the road staring at fall foliage and the scenes down in the valleys!!! betty had no trouble with the twists, turns, or hills, and even had no trouble "offroading it" to our campsite. fairly steep, rutted out, curvy gravel road covered in leaves and pine needles. perfect driving conditions, to say the least (hahaha) nervous at first, but slow and steady and we were fine. everyone said the leaves were the most beautiful in several years, and that this weekend was THE peak weekend for color! high of 61 degrees on saturday, and sunny. effing amazing ride  highly recommending getting as many buddies as possible on the brp stemer!

Have you checked to make sure the oil plug and oil filter are tight? They might have vibrated loose. You might want to also check that you are not low on oil after all the oil you have lost. If it was not the oil filter or plug, you might want to check the gear oil plugs.

I had overcast and fog on the day I drove it - and the colors were awesome then. I can't imagine how beautiful it was on a sunny day. I know what you mean about driving off the road.

Short video I shot while driving: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9eEzgeWm8A
The colors didn't come out quite as strong on You Tube, but you get the idea.

Back on topic...

I've also had the oil-leaking issue. Twice now. Incidentally, once shortly after service, and once about 500 miles after it.

I dunno what the heck happened, to be honest: The oil level is still good, and it's not done it since. But it's definitely done it twice now. :?

The good news is that after the second time, I haven't seen it again (and that was about 700 miles ago...).

I say just make sure the level is okay, clean your tire up, and keep an eye on it. :D

I dunno why Buddies/Betties seem to make oil expand, but they may help solve the oil dilemma. :P
Huh? What just happened?

so, axeyrcat, what type of oil were you leaking? and from where? my dealer cleaned and tightened everything, and checked levels, and everything seems to be fine now, but do you think a plug was just loose somewhere? or do you think my issues can be attributed to strapping her into the truck? i am not really worried about it, but am more curious than anything else. any help is great!!

Engine oil.

What seems odd is for them to be leaking and then to be at a normal level after that.

It's as if they were over-filled.

However, I watched the tech fill my oil when it was serviced, and he was precise to the cc as far as specs go... I wonder if oil hides somewhere inside the Buddy. :?
