Speed Demon

Post by GatsbyGirl »

So, for the past couple of weeks I've been convinced there was something wrong with my car -- '06 VW Bug -- because everytime I'm driving it it seems like the acceleration takes forever.

Finally realized over the weekend that it's not the car, it's the fact that I've gotten used to how speedy the Buddy is off the line.

On the one hand, never knew that this would be something that would matter to me. On the other, it brings home what ericalm has been telling me. 1) That I need to be aware that I can quickly and easily put a substantial amount of distance between myself and any suspicious cagers. 2) I really need to indicate braking early and often since the cars behind me can't stop on a dime.

I flash my tail lights when I know I'll be breaking soon, at the aproximate spot I would were I driving a car. Then I continue accelerating until I get to a braking spot, flashing my lights now and then until I finally brake. This way I'm (hopefully) letting them know that I AM braking, and the cars in front of me ARE slowing/stopping.

That said, I've had to abrubtly stop at high speeds twice, and my god, that baby can STOP. Solid, not a jerk or lockup in sight.

I love stopping quickly on all the roads later at night around my neighborhood, so fun. But yeah, like hermit I always flash my lights before I get to a stop, mostly to signal that I'm letting off the throttle a little bit. Something I picked up at my MSC. I have had a scare one time though, where I had to stop abruptly at a light that doesnt like to stay yellow long. I stopped quick and the guy behind me wouldve re-ended me had I not let off and gotten to the side quickly. Keep an eye on your mirrors when braking.

Yep, it really is breaking car-driving habits. My father drilled "don't ride the brakes" into my head for years.
