New mirrors......

Post by brimstone »

has anyone on here had any experience with replacing the stock mirrors with new ones that have the turn signals on the back side? i was toying with the idea but then realized i'd have to add a relay or something if they're led lights. i don't hate the stock ones, just looking for something a little more stream line.

I thought about doing that too. I decided to wait, $$$. Custom Dynamics sells lots of flexible LED strips that would work great for it. Too bad you can't just put some Gixxer mirrors on it and call it a day, the newer Suzukis have those already. I may put some LED strips on the belly pan (since I have to replace it anyway) and wire that to the location light in the headlight so it goes on when the bike is running. Just thinking for now...

i have these, they are small but are simply gorgous and very adjustable, they have tinted glass with a zoom effect.

one problem is they vibrate like mad at idle but once your moving its great, they also look the nuts.

look in genral discussion for my shop thread and the first pic has my bike with them on.

I love the look of the stock mirrors on my rattler 50 - with the silver & black that matches the bike... but I wish the "stems" were about 3 or 4 inches longer - maybe I am just a "wider" guy (42 regular) but I have trouble seeing past myself in the mirrors.

Yeah.. I just emailed scooterworks to find out how long the stems are on these - they emailed me back & say 12" - my stock ones are 5 or 6" so this might be a good fit... I just need to figure out if fit in the same holes as the stock ones....
http://www.scooterworks.com/Mirror_Squa ... 15C191.cfm

I still dont like them as much as the stock.... but if I can actually see past myself, it might have to make the switch.

Hey... these might look tough on a rattler (but not mine  )

those are very cool - & they look like you could put longer stems on them, if needed -
wish I knew about the size (8mm or 10mm???)
before I broke my foot, my plan was to take one off & go to my local hardware store & try some nuts until I figured it out.

a little off topic, but does anyone know the diameter of the rattler handlebars? are they 7/8" ?

yes 7/8". I've been looking at bars, but don't really know what I want - I just need them a little narrower then stock so I can get it into the shed easier without opening the other door - it's about as wide as the opening stock.

Do what POC did, cut an 1" off of each side, re-thread the bars and re-install the end caps. Shorter bars and if you can borrow the tools, FREE :D

I assume these are not DOT approve turn signals (just safety lights) - but as long as they are bright enough... I dont think the cops would know that.

Actually... in Illinois, i dont think you even have to have turn signals
http://www.msf-usa.org/downloads/Equipm ... SFlogo.pdf

I assume there is some US DOT regulation on cycle / scooter turn signals because the ones imported to the states have the DOT lights that are farther apart than the OEM ones. I assume the mirror lights would meet the distance regulation -

I like the idea of these... I need mirrors that have longer stems & dont like the "added on" DOT turn signals that we all have.

i don't think the cops around here will notice. i think i have one of about 12 scooters in town. as long as it has turn signals. i'll double check before getting rid of my stock ones though, just in case. hehehe

Yeah... I wouldnt be too worried about the cops in my town knowing or caring about the turn signals being DOT.

I would just make sure they are bright enough to be seen on a bright day... you dont want to be turning left & get hit because someone couldnt see your turn signal.

The "running lights" on my trailer are not nearly as bright as the turn signals on my scooter, for instance.

Ok... I feel a little stupid now
I was having a smoke & looking at my scooter in the garage today...
I noticed that my mirrors were installed so that the stems were parallel to the hand grips - in other words, they were at an angle.
I adjusted them to be straight across the centerline of the scooter & then adjusted the mirrors back.
I still get my elbows in the mirrors, but now I can use about 75% of them where as before my elbows blocked about 50%
Its better....

Just as a point of information....the thread size is 8mm....I ordered some kick ass mirrors from ebay and had to buy adapters to make them work. The adapters looked geeky so I drilled and re-tapped the holes to be 10mm. Now the mirrors look awesome and fit the hole without the adapters. If you are looking for some adapters, let me know, as I now have a pair. I will take some pictures tomorrow when the sun is out and post them.
