I almost stopped in Joy, Ill., to get a pic.

The unexpected highlight of the trip was a swinging bridge in Columbus Junction, Iowa. There was a sign there that explained its history and gave some facts. It was rebuilt in 1922 to span of 262 feet. About halfway across, it really starts to live up to its namesake, to the point you feel like you might get tossed over the side. Not helping matters any is the frayed cable in the middle of the span. Not sure of the drop, but you're higher than some of the treetops.

BTW, thanks for this week's topic. I really enjoyed the ride ... 60 miles each way filled with some amazing river roads, scenic farm landscapes and charming rural small towns. It's refreshing to see that every so often.
I suppose I should be upset, even feel violated, but I'm not. No, in fact, I think this is a friendly message, like "Hey, wanna play?" and yes I want to play. I really really do.

Great pics. I love the rural riding too. Fortunately, even tho I'm near Richmond, I'm in a semi-rural area. It makes for great riding. Glad you had better luck than I did on finding that long sign!

Walk across! I'll risk my own life on a shaky bridge, but not my scooter's!

We had a plan to get at least 2 more signs (Rockford and Loves Park) just for the fun and the ride, but the weather was so off and on and would not cooperate this week! Oh well.

I was going for nitty gritty New England down-on-its-luck mill town...thanks North Providence. Oh, and I couldn't find a "Welcome to Providence" sign. We don't wancha!

+15 for letters
+1 for me
= 16 points

sign close up ... I particularly like the "growing with greatness" slogan. That's not the slogan I would associate with North Providence.

Here's the new effort for this week. Scrap the West Bridgewater sign and insert Lower Mills Dorchester.

I go from 16 points to 21 points.

Here's the shot and a little recap...

Image

Here is Lower Mills Dorchester, a Massachusetts town on the edge of Boston. The town name has 20 letters in it and I’m in the photo along with scootle.

I should get extra credit for courting danger by being on a traffic island where it says Tow Zone.

*Had to run across two lanes of traffic FOUR times to get the self-timer to take the shot of me without capturing the side of a passing vehicle or over-exposing the photo. I'll post those if you want. They're horrible.

OK. OK. Stop begging. Here they are...

Image

You can see my head over the bed of the truck. Orange helmet.

Image

Here you can see the results of either a nuclear bomb blast in Lower Mills Dorchester or the very adept photographer jeff who set the camera up by setting the self timer exposure wrong by just clicking the shutter into my closed hand before setting it on the trunk or a car and running across the street.

Enjoy!

Jeff
ppssshhh...lower mills is a neighborhood in dorchester. it is not it's own town. i wouldn't rat on you but you are SO HARD on everyone else in this hunt that i couldn't resist.

From wikipedia:
The southern part of Dorchester is primarily a residential area, with established neighborhoods still defined by parishes, and occupied by families for generations. Yet it continues to change, as best observed in the growth of its distinct commercial districts: Bowdoin/Geneva, Fields Corner, Codman Square, Peabody Square, Adams Village and Lower Mills. Other Dorchester neighborhoods include Savin Hill, Jones Hill, Four Corners, Franklin Field, Franklin Hill, Ashmont, Meeting House Hill, Neponset, Popes Hill and Port Norfolk.

BUSTED!

I was even gonna comment on this one and I have never questioned anyone. The sign even says "City of Boston".

From Wikipedia
Dorchester is Boston's largest and most populous neighborhood. Due to its size of about six square miles, it is often divided for statistical purposes. North Dorchester includes the portion north of Quincy Street, East Street and Freeport Street. South Bay Center and Newmarket industrial area are major sources of employment. The main business district in this part of Dorchester is Uphams Corner, at the intersection of Dudley Street and Columbia Road. The Harbor Point area (formerly known as Columbia Point) is also the home of several large employers, including the Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts. The southern area of Dorchester is bordered to the east by Dorchester Bay and to the south by the Neponset River.

The eastern areas of Dorchester (especially between Adams Street and Dorchester Bay) are primarily ethnic European and Asian, with a large population of Irish Americans and Vietnamese Americans, while the residents of the western, central and parts of the southern sections of the neighborhood are predominantly African Americans. In Neponset, the southeast corner of the neighborhood, as well as parts of Savin Hill in the north and Cedar Grove in the south, Irish Americans maintain the most visible identity. In the northern section of Dorchester and southwestern section of South Boston is the Polish Triangle, where recent Polish immigrants are residents. In recent years Dorchester has also seen an influx of young working professionals, working artists (in areas like Lower Mills , Peabody Square and Savin Hill).

deleted my argument

not going to make my point if people are still using something from six or seven weeks ago as ammo for a discussion today.

I'll take the West Bridgewater points and see you around.

sotied wrote:My bad. I never thought of it as anything other than just another local town. Truly. I would have gone to Arlington Heights instead, but Dorchester is right on my way into Boston.

If this is the ruling, I have no issue going back to my West Bridgewater sign. But then how am I to know if that town - which I've know as a separate town all my life - is really a town?

For that matter, is North Providence really a town or just the northern part of Providence? **Not calling you out Sioban, just recalling your entry while I rant about this.**

I think you all blow. I've been VERY compliant the last few weeks and haven't called anyone out since week three (if I recall correctly) when I was mean to Oscoot.

I will admit that in the first five weeks I did try to get away with stuff, but Scoot Lamont has been blindsided by everyone every week.

It's gotten to the point where he almost has to say...

"Sign has to say 'WELCOME TO' and the ONE WORD after that phrase is your town. Count up the letters and submit it. Signs on buildings don't count. Signs that don't welcome you don't count. ONLY AS INDICATED."

And the real reason I'm royally peeved at this is your comments came today - a mere 3.5 hours before the contest ends. There's no way I can go out to a similar-length town.

AND the town I originally chose - Manchester-by-the-Sea (yes, that's it's legal name) didn't work for me because it's 2 hours away (each way) and I was told that the hyphens wouldn't count, so I didn't even try to force the issue because I could get almost the same length by riding half an hour.

I give you all a fat raspberry and will take whatever SL decides is right. I got a sign. I got what I believed was a town. I got good photos. AND I didn't berate anyone else's attempts.

For goodness sake, I'm not even in the running for the prize....which now seems like a punishment...taking over and trying to please everyone in this game.

Maybe I'll see you here next week. I'll bring a notary with me and will submit a certificate of authenticity along with my next set of photos.
I have always thought this was just suppose to be fun and the points were more of a novelty than anything else.

Only because there is nothing exciting on the Olympics right now

You know what? I honestly believe that you thought it was a town and I don't think you were trying to fool anyone.

I really expected something like this to pop up earlier with all the suburbs of Chicago or something like that.

I have no problem with you getting the points ... but I will be miffed that I could have used a nearby neighborhood (Sunny Valley Estates or something like that) instead.

Nah, I won't be miffed. I had a great day on a long ride with my dad and we got to see some great sights. I think I'm finding the true spirit of the game.

It's a good theory, but why even give points if we're not going to keep score?

We're not playing a politically correct game of little league baseball where nobody loses.

If that's the theory behind the hunt, I'm gonna just start a new thread with Oscoot and we'll just share our adventures and photos.

Seems just as much fun and we'll probably face less criticism.

Further, if everyone thought it was just for fun and the points were a novelty, then why spend time online researching town names just to DQ someone's 'fun' entry?

Hello pot, please meet kettle.

Jeff
This is just my vision of the game, the points were to add more to the game. As you can see I took 6 points this week when I could have driven 20 minutes and gotten 15 with "New Symerna Beach" but the Debary sign was cooler. The only reason I commented is because your sign specifically says "City of Boston" on it and the week with the historic building/statue thing how mean you were to Oscoot really stuck in my memory.

I am not sure why your response to me is so hostile. Again this is just a fun game. But since again the Olympics are boring me I looked this up on the City of Boston website. Dorchester is a neighborhood in the "City of Boston".

http://www.cityofboston.gov/neighborhoo ... s.asp?id=8

Btw, Nice to meet you Kettle.

Before we get to sotied I gotta say that these have been some nice pics this week & I am looking for to doing the video.
For a few moments I thought about going to Argonne National Laboratory (25pts) - it's only a few miles away & has houses, a post office, a zip code, police & a really nice "Welcome To" sign, but lets face it... its not really a town.

Well.. I guess I gotta rule on Lower Mills Dorchester.
Is it a nice pic? yep
is it in the intent of the hunt? yep
would I have cought it? nope
is it a city or town sign? - evidently not
so I cant give you the points for that one sotied.
For what its worth, your West Bridgewater pic is a better pic.

now... any other last minute people still posting or can I start working on the video???

The first one shows the sign and the second one is just to prove that the actual city name is Dalworthington Gardens

So first my first ever scavenger hunt submission I tabulate my score as:
+21 for the city name Dalworthington Gardens
+1 for me being in the pic

+22 points for first submission! Woohoo!
Well, I'm gonna say this one more time and sit back and wait for the crap to flow my way. I still think this is a DQ on a city sign. So there! Everyone else has gotten signs that are at least recognizable city signs. This is a marquee! And for all we know, it could be the sign in front of the high school with the same name. Sorry newslinky, but I just don't think you quite captured the intent......even if SL gave you the points for it. My 2 cents.

I can. And do. But I wanted to stop my ranting because I was starting to get irked and it is only a game. And after the hoopla that surrounded my little comments about someone's ride around the United States in the shape of a Gefilte Fish or something, I didn't want to rile anyone else up.

I sincerely thought Dot Lower Mills was a town. My GF tells me that she knew, but I didn't ask her. In fact, the Mayor of Boston lives in Hyde Park (another neighborhood that I thought was a town). As is Jamiaca Plain and about 15 other local neighborhoods.

Guess that's what you get when the towns have been here 200 years longer than other parts of the country and for some reason the city of Boston decides to annex them. C'mon, gimme a break. I coulda had 5 more imaginary points!

If next week is the Harley Riders, I have already met up with a local gang and told them I'll come to them on their regular ride if they'll pose with me. They ride at (GET THIS) 7AM on Sundays from an auto-parts store a few towns away...or is it neighborhoods.

Chat soon. Might even turn that Sunday adventure into a separate thread so readers on this thread don't get all bristly about taking up resources with photos and pleasant anectdotes.

12 hours from now we'll know what the contest is. w00t!

I'm with ya, sotied. Yeah....kinda surprised me.....all the folks getting upset about posting photos and a funny story about the hunt on, of all places.....a scavenger hunt thread......in ... what d'ya know.....a photo GALLERY. Duh?

So while we're all being bitchy.....how about those of you who quote others and REPEAT ALL THE PHOTOS. Now that's a lot fun.....scrolling through duplicate pics.

OK, I'm done.....going to bed to rest up for my next adventure. Sotied, I look forward to seeing / reading about YOUR adventures!

About the points....
I am glad we are tracking the points - I think this would have died a long time ago if we were not doing that.
I enjoy the fact that some people (like me) are happy to just play when they want & post up a fun pic & are not worried about the points.
I also enjoy seeing what our top 6 or 8 players are willing to do for points every week
I think we are lucky to have it both ways.
Strong competitors AND casual players.

lettering on buildings does not count
or signs for other things than the town (First Church of Lemont does not)
We want it to be the "town" sign usually found when you are riding into town - but now always - some towns have their nice sign in the middle of town - but again, it must the the town sign & not a sign for somthing in the town

Everyone else has gotten signs that are at least recognizable city signs. This is a marquee! And for all we know, it could be the sign in front of the high school with the same name. Sorry newslinky, but I just don't think you quite captured the intent......even if SL gave you the points for it. My 2 cents.
Does it say high school? have your ever seen a sign for a school that didnt say high school? Does it say bank? Or church?
you have never seen a town sign that they can put the letters on? Really?
I assume its a moo point (like a cow's opinion) becasue with the warm reception we game him, I doubt he will play next week - but hopefully he will.
He would have started out in 26th place! (& that is worth $1,200 scooter dollars*)

*scooter dollars have no actual value. void in Hawaii and Texas. your actual scooter dollars may vary.

Only because there is nothing exciting on the Olympics right now
North Providence is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 32,411 at the 2000 census
Hey Othergods, thanks for getting my back. Yeah, North Prov is a separate city with a different mayor than Providence (both Italian, though, so maybe it is the same place :)

Sotied, I'm not so annoyed for being called out (incorrectly) but for having my name spelled incorrectly. And you're a writer! It makes me *crazy* when people can't handle a B and H next to each other! And (yes again) you should know that we have neighborhoods in our cities on the east coast. There must be 15 different neighborhoods in Providence alone, but I was being stand-up and using "real" towns.

Isn't this supposed to be fun? I've said it once, I'll say it again, I don't know how you do it ScootLemont. Where are all our New Yorkers, Chicagoans and Angelenos. Come on people...are you leaving it to us second-rate towns to represent? We want to see some gleaming skyscrapers.

Thanks - some days it is not as much fun as others for me.

FYI - I can see the Chicago skyline from my upstairs bedroom windows - but I would have to ride about 30 miles through the soutwest side & being a suburban boy, I am afraid I would get scooter-jacked before I made it to the lakefront.

HOODY-HOO! Got my pic in just in time.... not a lot of choice in town names around here, the closest one that would give me more points is like 35-40 miles away. I didn't get a chance to ride over there this week, we've had more T-storms. Anyways, here it goes:

9 points for P-E-N-S-A-C-O-L-A
+1 cuz I'm in the shot

10 points total!!! Pretty good for a last-minute ride downtown... It's a beautiful night for riding too.

Before anyone says anything....
DOWNTOWN P-E-N-S-A-C-O-L-A is good since she is not counting downtown.

not going to make my point if people are still using something from six or seven weeks ago as ammo for a discussion today.

I'll take the West Bridgewater points and see you around.

Are you doing that or having it done?

How, how much, how easy or hard?

Thanks.

Sorry -- didn't see this until tonight.

I'm trying to work out all the details. I am planning for this to be a winter project, once it becomes too cold for this woman of a "certain age" to ride. I'll put my scoot on blocks (somehow) and remove the wheels to mess with them. In asking advice from other scooter people, many seem to think I can do this with several coats of spray paint, and lots of curing time between the coats. A couple of folks have recommended that I take the wheels to be professionally powdercoated, but we haven't been able to figure out if "sparkly" is available.

Once I get this together, I'll post info.

Thanks for the interest!

For sparkly, not sure it would be the ruby slipper effect you're looking for, but we had my kid's bike painted. The paint shop had a new clearcoat with crushed glass particles in it they wanted to see on something before they used it. So they shot my kids bike with it. Let me tell you it looked amazing! Like tiny prisms in it. Full spectrum of colors. Anyway... yeah, you can do clear coat over powdercoat.

Actually, to answer you question, No, I've never seen a city sign that they can put the letters on. Guess that only happens in TX.

As for the warm reception......he got one....I for one just didn't happen to think his pic qualified, but I'm not the judge. Besides, to survive in this game you sure better be able to take the "hits". A better name for this game might be Survivor Hunt.
