I'm sure NY does too... but I don't really care. If I'm going to be more visible to other drivers then good, pull me over for being more visible! So far the only thing I've heard of other motorcyclists getting pulled over for is underglow, nothing for any other additional lights. As long as the additional lights are not pointing towards the ground (I think) I should be okay.
I might also get an additional LED brake light and turn signals for the rear because after putting on my rear rack, and bungee-ing my "locker-sized" milk crate to it today, the turn signals and brake light are in shadow. I will have to have my bf sit on it and play with the lights for me to actually see and decide what I want to do. If I do though, they will probably be mounted ON the crate itself, and plug in only when I need the crate on there. Oh, and I will post a picture tomorrow with the rack and everything on there if anyone is interested.

@Akaipaps, thanks! I'm glad to finally be seeing it home instead of at a shop! :)
We can't have underglo, or anything not on the front or back that looks even remotely cosmetic, and they are pretty strict about it. I had also been thinking about a milk crate, because I know the Buddy back racks tend are on the smaller side, and top cases are kind of expensive- plus, I've grown used to being able to bungee down a free-form to a back rack, instead of forcing something to fit in a confined space... so I was hoping the milk crate would be a nice compromise.

Anyway... I have to salute you for the Serenity idea. So much win. <3 Firefly.

lol "yet" is definitely the key word there... I still have yet to jump out of a plane.. but it will happen eventually! Nice of her to offer to drive a support truck though!

That's kind of lame on VA's part... it just makes sense to allow for something that can help make the rider more visible. But like I said, NY probably has some sort of regulations about it too, but if we do, it's not strictly enforced, everyone knows underglow is a no no, but it seems that anything else (within reason) is fair game.
I went with the milk crate because I can remove it in like 10 seconds if I know I won't need it. Also, (no offense to any of you that have them) I think the top cases are just kinda goofy looking. While a milk crate is not that much better in the looks department, it still serves the same purpose just fine, the only thing is that I can't really lock it.
I have 4 bungees on there it keeping it in place, and a bungee net over the top so nothing falls out, but I wouldn't carry anything of real value in there just for the fact that it cannot be locked. It worked perfect bringing home lunch yesterday though! Fits two, foot long subs in there quite nicely laying flat on the bottom, and they were still warm when I got home!
Oh, I should mention, I bought both a regular sized milk crate AND a "locker sized" one that is much smaller. I like the locker sized one much better because the two short sides don't have holes, it makes for a little less drag and wind noise. It also just seems a bit sturdier, probably because of the lack of holes, as well as it's supposed purpose for holding text books.

I will post pictures of them on the scoot later today.

BTW sorry that some of the images are HUGE and some are much smaller... I tried to pick out all of the smaller ones, for some reason my phone saves two copies of each. It's annoying to me, and I apologize for passing that annoyance on to you guys and gals!

Mission: Take Serenity To Work was a success!
The fun part will be riding home in record low temps (~35*F) but I think I should be okay. Thankfully the rest of the week is supposed to be warmer and less windy than today!

AWinn, Where did you find your 'locker-sized' crate??

I've checked several stores today, and I found that Sterilite brand crate (with the round holes) at WalMart... I liked that the holes were smaller and round, versus the giant triangular openings I am used to seeing... but that particular crate was larger (I think made for filing papers), so one side was longer instead of being square, and I felt like the sides were actually kind of flimsy so I left without getting it.

Thanks for the photos! I have a multi-pack of bungees I preemptively purchased, but they aren't flat like yours- I had a feeling I would need to exchange them :)

Love it! So glad you finally got your scoot! I would have replied earlier but I was being obnoxiously anti-scoot-social since mine was in the shop for two weeks getting the engine replaced! I got it back this morning and I'm a happy man again!

I really enjoyed Firefly and Serenity (the movie) when they were on. Definitely hit-and-miss but a good series overall.

I like the milk crate as well, although I am a member of the goofy topcase crowd. :D

@ LovelandStella, Thanks!

@ LunaP, I actually got them both at WalMart. They were there as "back to school/college" stuff... but I think you can still get them online if they aren't in store anymore. Either that or maybe OfficeMax or Staples.

@ PugBuddy, Super thanks! Sorry to hear that your scoot was in the shop for so long, but I bet it feels like a million bucks with the new motor!

I did notice the major difference between goofy top case and small milk crate today on my way to work, the crate isn't exactly the most aerodynamic thing in the world .... but it's cool. I just had to go unusually fast today because I left my house late, and traffic was moving in a fairly cooperative manner. So when I would usually be going about 45mph, I was going about 60 today, at 40-45 the crate's not that bad.

@ LunaP, I checked WalMart's site, and this is what I got..

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-Loc ... k/17126916
"In Stores. Prices may vary" "Limited stock at your Glenville store"

But I will keep searching!

So... I kept searching and found only one place that had them for purchase online, but it was a set of 15 for $36. The kicker is that they don't accept orders less than $500. Lame.
I would say check the clearance section at Wally World. If you want, I can check my local one too, and if we have them here I can send it to you. Idk how well it would fair in shipping though :?

Thank you both. I'm glad to know I'm not the only man who thinks that way. I was beginning to think I was weird.

The show sounds interesting. I might have to hunt up that DVD set.

The show was great, so was the movie (although they didn't fit quite well together)... There should only be like one DVD of it though, I think they only made 14 episodes :(

Mission: Ride Serenity Home, also a success.
It ended up being about 48*F outside. Still pretty cold. My jacket, neck warmer and everything were all good, but I will definitely be doubling up on gloves under my gloves next time it's that chilly out!

THIS

Is my current problem (aside from the fact that my armored winter coat and lap blanket have not come in yet... grrr). I am currently looking online at at brand called Arctiva... it's a company that actually makes gear for snowmobiling. My shop had a random, older pair of arctivas that had obviously been in the shop for a while- they are the first generation 'gem' series gloves, and they have most recently made the Gem 3's... but I was really impressed by several things about that particular pair of gloves.

First off- nothing labeled 'ladies' fits me. Ever. I'm a bigger girl, so I've had a problem with jackets... we've already discussed boots... gloves are the same way. (I've been wearing boyfriend's hand-me-downs- a $70 pair of AlpineStars, which frankly, for $70, SUCK... they are too bulky for how little warmth I get from them, don't break the wind or protect from water as well as they should, and if I wear thin leather driving gloves underneath they are properly warm but are SUPER bulky and tire my hands very quickly, which is what you may find as well) If it says it's a women's glove, I can't get it on my hand even if it's a large, I usually don't try it on, and men's gloves or no, I never seem to reach all the way to the fingertips with my fingers. So, you can imagine my surprise when not only did I try on this random pair of ladies smalls, they fit AND my fingers went to the tips! They were kind of thing for winter gloves, though- so I picked up a pair of bigger, leather winter gloves by Rev'it and wore one on each hand for about 20 minutes while waiting for my back rack to be installed. The Arctiva glove kept my left hand just as warm as the Rev'it on my right, but with less bulk and more free motion. It also seems to have better ability to adjust, and have a longer cuff. I haven't been able to find any online reviews, and I left the shop deciding I was going to research the brand... but I haven't been able to stop thinking about them. They were pretty nice, and thin enough that if I had to put other gloves underneath I wouldn't have the same problem as before o.o

If you are interested, motorcyclesuperstore.com has a few of their pairs for less than the manufacturer site, and I also found some on ebay with free shipping.

Blargh... so excited about the gloves, forgot to mention about the crate... mum gave me one that I kind of hate, but hey, it was free. Not 100% of the bungees I put on... they seem good, buuuuut... I dunno. It'll be my luck that one day, just when it has lulled me into a false sense of security...

Wth is with all the bungees I found having these huge annoying hooks? My bungee net I got from the scoot shop has these nice, unobtrusive metal ones... why can't they all be like that?? /rant

Got these little lovelies in the mail yesterday. They are technically "hiking" boots, but they have a nice 2-2.5" chunky heel on them with some pretty hefty tread on the soles. If you couldn't tell from my pictures above, I still couldn't sit flat footed on the Buddy in my normal boots, and I feel a little more comfortable having some kind of heel on the ground. These are extremely comfy, and provide a decent amount of ankle support. But most importantly, they are really cute with leggings, boot cut, or skinny jeans.. I am actually wearing them at work today to break them in.
Where'd you get those?? Do the laces stay tied? Are they easy to get on/off? (no zipper, right?) I'm fine on my Buddy but challenged on my Bonneville - going to have the seat lowered - but would still like something to add some height.

Well, I ordered them from Kohl's. I just checked online and I couldn't find them again though, could just be user error, I had a hard time finding them once I decided to order them too. They are very easy to get on and off, and they do not have a zipper. I always do double knots when I wear shoes that tie, because I don't want them to come untied, and the laces are certainly long enough. I also attached additional hook/loop jobbies (the things that are usually the top 3 'holes' on regular hiking and work boots) so that I can tie them up higher over my ankle, and make to keep them tight.

For Cold weather a good ( I like silk ) a good pair of thin glove liners and a good balaclava work wonders! I always carry both in my jacket pockets for when I get caught a little underdressed.
Also, good undergarments ( long johns, again 100% heavyweight silk if you can swing the cost) help alot..And then you just accumulate good bike riding gear...I have a fortune in my bike closet, but I have accumulated it over 30 years :)
I think its AWESOME to see you guys riding in the cold...All it takes is good gear and a little determination. Way to go !

Last night was great, the only thing on me that was really cold were my knees. My hands were just a comfort thing, they were a little chilly, but they weren't frozen. I have a good deal of skiing and snowmobiling gear already, (including a large array of silk liners for pretty much every part of me) it's just all kind of buried since we moved recently, and our downstairs flooded during the hurricane, so it's even MORE buried now. My balaclava is the kind that can snap into a jacket, but I was fine last night with just my double-lined fleece neck warmer, idk how well the balaclava would fit under my mod-FF helmet, it's already rather snug. Not to mention, my hair would be a horrible disaster

Haha well that's usually how my hair looks, "roughed up". It's naturally wavy and I usually only towel dry it. Gives it a nice "messy" look but still tame and not grungy looking. I do have to blow dry my bangs, otherwise they would stick straight up, like "Something About Mary" style.
Anyway, if I wear even a bandana too tight under my helmet it just squashes my hair around my skull, but the bit that hangs out the back of my helmet ends up fluffy... it looks weird.

Here we go, recent FB pic from when I got my new specs.

It fits my tough, nerdy, gear-head, girl with tattoos style I think :P

So sorry LunaP, I must have missed this!
My bungees have huge annoying hooks compared to the bungee net too. I feel like it's a good thing though. In some cases it takes a little fenagling to get them in and out of the holes in the crates, but the bigger stronger hooks make me feel a little more at ease. I feel like if they were smaller there would be a greater chance of them getting too stressed and just letting go. When I take my crates off, or switch them out, I usually just leave the bungees on there, and let them hang loosely while it's sitting on the shelf, that way I don't have to waste time trying to weave them through every time.

Okay, so I have a question.

Recently got a trickle charger/battery tender and the cigarette lighter adapter for the 170... but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. When I first plugged it in the red light and the orange light came on on the charger, but now only the red light is showing, and it's not going to the green light that means "charged" ... anyone have an idea what's going on here?

The only charger we're -sure- can be used safely through the Buddy 12v accessory socket is the Battery Tender JUNIOR. It has a max charge current of 750ma, which will not blow the 1A fuse protecting that socket. The regular Battery Tender, plus other brands for general automotive use, put out too much current, over 1 amp in base charge mode, and will guaran-damn-tee blow the fuse. This is consistent with what you're telling us - it's not charging because the fuse between the socket and battery is blown, and the light doesn't change.

To check, hook up a cell charger, plug in your phone, and see if it's charging. If not, the fuse, 1A, under the nose cover, is blown. The fuse is in an in-line blade-type holder.

It's a really good thing that my boyfriend scoots too and totally doesn't care, because I resigned myself to having crap hair already. I put up the white flag. I may try a bandana, but it's really only going to keep my liner clean- it's my ponytail that gets messed up. I just roll it up and stick a claw clip around the knot after I put on the helmet, since I can't stand it on my neck- or, put my neckwarmer over it and deal. I was gonna get a trim and re-layer my hair... but screw it. It can grow for a winter and maybe I can do locks of love by the time spring comes!

Crap. I will check it out in the morning, pretty sure the tender I have is 1.5 amp. Good thing we have packages upon packages of spare, various-sized fuses. Thanks for the info!

My BF rides a motorcycle, but I will not give up on my hair lol. The bandana works okay, better with my half helmet than my mod-FF, the mod-FF pretty much just flattens it within a half hour no matter what I try. If I know I'm going on a long trip I tend to just straighten my hair, if it's going to be flat, I would rather not have it look like I have strange dread-locks :P The half helmet is the only one I can really clip my hair up with, I can put a hair tie in it if I'm wearing my mod-FF or my 3/4, but it just makes a crease by the time I get to where I'm going. I am in serious need of a hair cut though, if I wore my bangs straight down like I had when I originally had them cut last fall, they would go down to the tip of my nose... good thing I have gotten used to, and am capable of forcing my bangs to go across my forehead at an angle, otherwise I would look like cousin IT.

Got my reflective tape from StreetGlo today. The lines look really thick in this picture, but they are really only 1/4" wide, and barely noticeable in daylight.

Some folks do put them on their motorcycles. Although one of my friend's says, that even if the deer do hear the whistle, how do they know which way to go?

Yeah that was my thought... but when I lived in Rochester (well outside of Rochester) for college, there was a huge deer problem. At the time I was driving a granny-gold 1994 Geo Prizm, and a friend of mine slapped a couple of deer whistles on it when I was at class... I didn't have any more close calls after that. When I got my 2002 Nissan Sentra, I didn't put any whistles on it, because it was a "new" car... nearly hit a group of 6 that ran across the road in front of me a few days later. Still left the whistles off, but I felt it hard to argue their functionality afterwards.
Then again, we make frequent trips down state and to CT on I-90/I-87 and we see deer all the time, no deer whistles on the VW, and no problems yet. *knock on wood*

I heard they DON'T work.......
If you've had luck with them, that means they work for you.
Could be the way others have them mounted.
I've ALWAYS wanted to try them, usually AFTER I've either had a close call or actually hit a deer, then I shortly forget the thought of them.....

I believe I found an article online about deer whistles once. Some state's game department, I believe it was Pennsylvania, did testing on both passive and active models and concluded there was no clear evidence that they worked.

I wish they did. It gets pretty bad around here in the fall.

I think by now deer should know they should stay away from roads, because bad things happen when you get too close to speeding vehicles! Ask Bambi's mom! :P

Also, I was hoping I wouldn't need to do this, because grown adults should know better.... but after watching 5 couples of various ages do the walk around and manhandle my scoot, I felt this was necessary.

I would have put the cover over it today, but I was running late and didn't get a chance to fold it up and put it under the seat before I left.

It never ceases to amaze me that an animal that is so smart in the woods gets so stupid beside the road.

I've seen lots of similar signs, but it's usually at car shows. I guess there's something particularly inviting and non-threatening about the appearance of a scooter that exerts an attraction on people.

Plus people tend to have less respect for other people's property nowadays.

Gorilla 8007 alarm, around $70. Scared the bejeebers out of some kids when I parked for a grade school meeting.
