Oh yeah I mowed the lawn for 3 dollars (for front and back...) from age 12-17. I finally just stopped doing it because my dad wouldnt give me a raise

cool neat blog as well!CWO4GUNNER wrote:Full time retired since 2004. Been working full time since I was 13 so at the age of 47 decided it was time to reflect.
What I did do was sweep factories at at 12 to 16.
At age 15-17 work in a loading dock loading simi-tractor trailers with cases of paint.
At age 17 graduated from high school early and joined the Navy and and became a weapon specialist (hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, & electricity) for 8 years earning the rank of E6 and then Joined the Coast Guard doing a host of different jobs from ship combat training, emergency diver, anti-terrorist force protection, so much I cant list it all and visited more then a dozen countries repeatedly. I retired from the Coast Guard as Chief Warrant Gunner 4 in 2004 at the age of 47. I can honestly say that I have been blessed as God has directed my path and have experienced more then most people do in 2 life times, so if I die tomorrow I Ok with that although Im still having fun.

During the work week, I'm an iPhone/iPad software designer at Apple.
Sure, the folks with the snazzy Cupertino address get all the attention, while nobody cares about a lowly retail Specialist, Part-Time (retired).ericalm wrote:Do you work at One Infinite Loop?Schomer wrote:During the work week, I'm an iPhone/iPad software designer at Apple.
Ha, yes they do! I'd work for them, but they keep rejecting my applications to work full-time wiping the sweat off Jonathan Ive's brow. I care! Own stock? Apple stock surpassed $400 today, making them the world's second highest valued company, behind Exxon. Apple's market value is more than Intel and Microsoft combined. That's what I get for not buying a ton during the Scully years.
Have a look at http://www.ram-mount.com/ . They seem to make the best stuff. There are a few out there, though, including some cheaper imitations on eBay.Schomer wrote:Which reminds me... it would be cool to have a mount on the scooter for my iPhone to act as a GPS. I miss Mel Tillis. Whataburger, not so much! In high school it was the place to go late at night (not much open to minors in Ft. Worth after midnight back then) and inevitably get in trouble, almost get in a fight, etc. Also, flat burgers!iMoses wrote:Dang I miss Whataburger... guess what I'm having for lunch as soon as I get in town next month?dshanson wrote:I'm a student and the University of Houston! and I have a couple of jobs, one at a burrito place called freebirds, and one at a retail shop called tuesday morning.

Same with a musician. I GOTTA play the piano everyday or I feel something is missing...TVB wrote:A writer writes. Ya gotta make time for it, every day.
Comics was my dream for a while, but it requires a lot of discipline. Drawing requires a lot of practice, and though I get better when I practice, but I don't keep at it. A lot of people seem to think that if you "can draw," everything just kind of comes out a certain way, fully formed. If it sucks, it's because you can draw, just not so well. If it's good, it's because you can draw better. But, no, like music, it requires practice.TVB wrote:Start tonight.theflash784 wrote:I would love to write some sceince fiction novels one of these days.
Brainstorm several ideas, and pick one. (Probably best to start with a short story instead of a novel, but that's your call.) List the main characters with a brief description of each, then write a one-page synopsis of the story.
Tomorrow, re-read that, make adjustments if necessary, and start writing. Resume writing the next day. Lather, rinse, repeat.
There's a simple difference between wanting to write a novel someday, and writing a novel. A writer writes. Ya gotta make time for it, every day. It doesn't have to be a lot of time every day, but you have to do it, and you have to make it a habit. I speak from experience: for years I wanted to make comics. Too many years. Not any more. I'm producing a graphic novel. It's going to be years before I have anything I can show for it (you think writing a scene takes a lot of time, try drawing it all), but I'm Doing The Work. If you want to write a science fiction novel, that's what you need to do: start writing (that's the hard part), then keep writing (that's the even harder part).

Guess I should update since that was my Cleveland job. Moved to San Diego for spouses job and it took me a little while to find a job. While I was looking I volunteered at a local University's med school on a project looking at barriers to health care encountered by former inmates with HIV....got a job, just started and will under go an insane amount of training but I will be HIV testing ,counseling and partner notification AND doing syphilis investigations-trying to stop spread of syphilis by locating and treating patients and partners. While not easy work, I have been lucky to find rewarding and interesting jobs, but ones people don't like to hear much about in polite conversation.peabody99 wrote:"Forensics Liaison"
I work with people with developmental disabilities that have found themselves in the criminal justice system. It is never a dull moment dealing with caseworkers, judges, attorneys, cops, psychologists, what have you. The clients are often the most sensible party. I need to write a book or script for a sitcom.
