Oil change - Buddy 125

Post by goodalle »

Using a quality six point 17mm socket on the engine oil drain plug, but the nut edges are going soft. I am pushing it up high. Any tips?

If you're using a 12 point socket you'll damage the drain plug. Use a 6 point instead. I actually use 6 point sockets for everything because they are more secure and have less chance of damaging bolt heads and nuts.

My bad...I didn't read the part that said you used a 6 point socket, sorry.

The good news is that the drain plug is one of those parts on a PGO engine that is generic GY6.

New plug time.
Six point is as good as it gets. Are you using it carefully? Straight in and fully connected should work great.
Also, don't overtighten the plug. If you don't have a "feel" for tightening, get a torque wrench from Harbor Freight and use it.

I'll take it to the shop that did the service in the first place before I shred the nut. I'll ask them how tight they're setting it.
Cheers

I like to put a little bit of grease on the threads and o-ring of the drain plug before installing. Makes it a bit easier to remove in the future.
